Chapter Forty-Seven: The Chapter on Upagupta Chapter Forty-Seven: The Chapter on Upagupta Thus have I heard. At one time, the Blessed One was dwelling in Shravasti, in the Jeta Grove, in the Garden of Anathapindika. At that time, in that country, there was a wandering ascetic named Upagupta, who was gentle of mind and clear of thought, and who was skilled in the past, the future, and the present. He went to where the Blessed One was and requested ordination from the Blessed One. He requested, "If, after I am ordained, my wisdom and eloquence are equal to those of Shariputra, then I will be ordained. If I do not have that much ability, then I will return home." The Blessed One said, "You do not have that much ability." So, that wandering ascetic was unable to be ordained and returned home. At another time, the Blessed One said to many attendants, "After I have passed into nirvana for hundreds of years, this Brahmin will be ordained and will possess the six superknowledges and wisdom, and will benefit beings as numerous as dust motes." When the Blessed One was about to pass into nirvana, he also said to Ananda, "After I have passed into nirvana, I entrust all the Sutra Pitaka to you. You must uphold and propagate them." After the Blessed One had passed into nirvana, Ananda immediately took hold of all the Dharma treasures. When Ananda was about to relinquish his body, he instructed his attendant Yashaki, "After I have passed away, I entrust all the Sutras to you. You must uphold them." Having said this, he further said, "In the land of ... Dara, there is a householder named Gupta who has a son named Upagupta. You must request him and ordain him. After you have passed away, you must also entrust the Dharma to him." After Ananda passed away, Yashaki upheld the Holy Dharma and did much to benefit beings in the world. Then, he went to ... Dara City and befriended those householders. He went to their house again and again, winning their trust. That householder had a son born to him, and he named him Upagupta. From the time he was small, Yashaki persuaded him and made him...

After the child was taken away, the householder said: I want a son like this. If it is for supporting the family, that won't do. If another one is born, it will be offered. Later, at another time, another son was born, and the name was carefully given as Kuvada. After that, Yasheiki also went there and took the child away. The householder also said: This eldest son must do outside work, and the younger son will be comfortable doing inside work, so he cannot be offered. If another son is born later, he will be offered, he said. Yasheiki is one of the Arhats with three kinds of knowledge, and is proficient in the faculties of sentient beings. Observing these two children, he felt that they did not seem to have the fate to become monks, so he did not force them. After that, this householder gave birth to another son, who was handsome and very cute. He went to the householder again, wanting to take the child away, and said: The child is still young and cannot work, and I am also very poor, so I cannot take him. I will offer it when he grows up a little, he said. Later, the child grew up and became smart, and the father also handed over the property to him and let him do business. At another time, Yasheiki himself went to him, taught the Dharma, and made him concentrate wholeheartedly. If a good thought arises, put a white stone, and if an evil thought arises, put a black stone, and count which one is more from time to time, he taught him. Upagupta also followed the teaching, and started counting stones from the arising of good and evil thoughts. At first, there were the most black stones and the fewest white stones. Then gradually the black and white stones were the same. After that, because he did not relax his concentration, there were no black stones, only white stones. Good thoughts were accomplished, and the first fruit was obtained. At that time, from that city, a prostitute sent a maid to buy flowers for Upagupta. Upagupta was naturally upright, and sold the flowers to the maid at a high price, so that she had no complaints. The maid took the flowers and offered them to the mistress.
