Chapter Twenty-five: The Bhikshuni Utpala Chapter Twenty-five: The Bhikshuni Utpala Thus have I heard. Once, the Blessed One was dwelling at Shravasti, in Jeta's Grove, Anathapindika's Garden. King Prasenajit had passed away, and the prince had ascended to the throne. Because the new king did not rule the country according to the Dharma as the previous kings had done, elephants trampled the people, and countless were killed. At that time, some women of noble and virtuous families, seeing such things, became disenchanted with household life, and all of them went forth and became bhikshunis. Among those who went forth, some were of the Shakya clan, and some were of royal lineage. They were unmatched in beauty and pleasing to behold. About five hundred women of noble birth renounced all their possessions and went forth. Therefore, all the people of the country were pleased with them and provided them with sustenance. Those bhikshunis said to one another, "Although we have gone forth, we have not tasted the nectar of the Dharma. Unless we pacify our attachment, hatred, and ignorance, it will not do. Let us go to the Sixfold Group of nuns to listen to the Dharma." Having said this, they went to where those nuns were, and after bowing down, they said, "Although we have gone forth, we have not tasted the nectar of the Dharma. Please teach us." The Sixfold Group thought, "If I could turn these women away from the Dharma and discipline, and obtain their Dharma robes and begging bowls, that would be wonderful." So they said, "You are of noble and high birth, possessing the seven precious things, elephants, horses, male servants, female servants, laborers, fields, and the necessities of life. Why have you renounced all these things and entered the life of a bhikshuni, enduring such afflictions and suffering, and joining the Buddha's teachings? If it is wrong, go back and have a household, and with sons and daughters, be happy together as you wish, play and enjoy this life, and give alms and do as you please, that would be better." They exhorted them in this way. When those bhikshunis heard this exhortation, they were displeased.

They came out of the ground. Then those nuns went to where the nun Utpalavarna was, and when they arrived there, they prostrated to Utpalavarna and asked about her health according to the Dharma, saying this: When we were at home, we were deceived by household affairs. Now that we have renounced the world, we have become slaves to desire and cannot be liberated from afflictions. Please teach us the sacred Dharma for the sake of your compassion. Utpalavarna said: Ask whatever you desire, whether it is past, future, or any present thing, and I will teach it. The nuns requested: Leave aside the past and future for a while, and teach us about the present, please dispel our doubts. Utpalavarna said: Attachment is like fire, it burns mountains and valleys. It is like a grass mat, it spreads. Because of attachment, they harm and injure each other. Therefore, they have been falling into the three lower realms for a long time, and there is no time for liberation. Living at home is clinging to suffering, experiencing separation from desires, birth, aging, sickness, death, and the suffering of being oppressed by the king's laws, experiencing it continuously. After life passes, the body and mind are tormented just to be revived again. Being trapped by the home, the bondage is tighter than a prison. I was also born into a wandering caste. My parents were also of noble and chaste lineage, so I heard a lot about the great wandering caste. I was given as a bride to a learned and wise man, and became his wife, and even had his son. Later, after my parents-in-law passed away, I became pregnant, and said this to my family: I am pregnant, and the months are getting close to full term. If I give birth to a child here, it will be dirty and unsightly. Let's go to my parents' house to give birth. The family said to me: Okay. The husband and wife took a son and went to the parents' house, but when they were halfway there, they felt unwell, so they gave birth to a son under a tree in the middle of the night. My husband was also sleeping on the side, and was bitten by a snake at night. When I called him at night, there was no sound.
