One should follow the teachings of those mothers, one should practice accordingly, one should act accordingly. Thus twice, thus three times. Dweller, this is the eight-limbed noble fast, thus abiding in the eight-limbed noble fast will be close to enjoying the desires of gods and humans. Dweller, you should abide in the eight-limbed noble fast. Also, diligently practice in the aspect of miraculous powers. Also, enjoy the desires of gods and humans. Dweller, if a son or daughter of good family who abides in the eight-limbed noble fast has faith, then how much merit does he or she have? It is impossible to measure the merit, or the result of merit, or the degree of maturation of the result of merit. However, it will be counted as a great accumulation of merit. Dweller, for example, the five great rivers flow and converge into one place, namely the Ganges, Yamuna, Sarayu, Ajiravati, and Mahi. For those waters, it is impossible to measure how much water there is, or a hundred pots of water, or a thousand pots of water, or a hundred thousand pots of water. However, it will be counted as a lot of water, a great river. Dweller, similarly, for a son or daughter of good family who abides in the eight-limbed noble fast, how much merit does he or she have? It is impossible to measure the merit, or the result of merit, or the degree of maturation of the result of merit. However, it will be counted as a lot of merit. Dweller, what do you think? Is it possible to measure how much water there is in the great ocean, that is, how much water, or a hundred pots of water, or a thousand pots of water, or a hundred thousand pots of water? The dweller replied: Gautama, in any case, how much water there is in the great ocean, that is, how much water, or a hundred pots of water, or a thousand pots of water, or a hundred thousand pots of water, that is impossible to measure, there is no opportunity. Gautama, why is that? Because that water flow is immeasurable. The Blessed One said: Dweller, that should be understood through analogy, if...

Any skilled in methods might measure the water of the great ocean, such as water, a hundred water pots, a thousand water pots, a hundred thousand water pots. But it is not possible to measure the merit of abiding even once in the upavāsa endowed with the eight limbs of the noble ones, such as merit, the fruit of merit, or the maturation of the fruit of merit. However, it goes into the category of much merit and a great heap of merit. Dwelling in that which possesses the eight limbs of the noble ones is thus of great fruit. It is thus of great benefit. It is thus of great power. It is thus of great extent. Dwelling place, closely abide in the upavāsa endowed with the eight limbs of the noble ones. Also, diligently practice in the area of miracles. Also, use it for the desires of gods and humans. Then, the Brahmin Dwelling Place said this to the Blessed One: 'O Gautama, if there are two people here, one of whom gives alms for as long as he lives, and the other also abides in the upavāsa endowed with the eight limbs of the noble ones for as long as he lives, then Blessed One, which of these two is more distinguished?' The Blessed One said: 'Dwelling place, here, abiding in the eight limbs of the noble ones and giving alms are not the same. Dwelling place, for example, in this Jambudvīpa, if it were filled with arhats, those who have exhausted defilements, done what should be done, accomplished what was to be done, laid down the burden, attained their own benefit, completely exhausted the bonds of existence, and whose minds are completely liberated by correct knowledge, and a son or daughter of good family were to give alms for as long as they live to the sixteen great countries, namely Aṅga, Magadha, Kosala, Kāśī, Vṛji, Malla, Puṇḍra, Phrekapa, Kāma, Avantī, Kuru, Pāñcāla, Vatsa, Pāladī, Yavana, and Kamboja, like this: precious vajra, cat's eye, padmarāga, indranīla, great beryl, jewel, pearl, vaiḍūrya, conch shell stone, coral, silver, and sālīsbr

Agate and, the essence of stone and, coral and, red pearl and, right-spiraling conch shells, etc., are meticulously crafted by hand with the power of diligence, removing dust and impurities. Serving and honoring those who possess the Dharma and have obtained it through the Dharma, as well as implements and, Dharma robes and, food and, bedding and, medicines for the causes of illness, is not as beneficial as a second person abiding once in the eight-limbed upavasatha. The accumulation of merit arising from the former's generosity does not even come close to one-hundredth of the accumulation of merit arising from abiding in the eight-limbed upavasatha. Not even one-thousandth and, one hundred-thousandth and, number and, part and, count and, metaphor and, cause are close. Abiding in the eight-limbed upavasatha is thus of great fruit. Thus of great benefit. Thus of great power. Thus vast. Abide, you should abide in the eight-limbed upavasatha. You should also diligently practice in the aspect of magical powers. You should also indulge in the desires of gods and humans. Abide, however, relying on the bliss of the gods, the kingdom of humans is inferior, because fifty years of humans is one day and night for the gods of the Four Great Kings, fifteen days of that day and night is half a month, thirty days is one month, twelve months is one year, and five hundred years of the gods calculated in that way is the measure of the lifespan of the gods of the Four Great Kings. Calculated in the human way, there are nine thousand centuries. Abide, whether a son of good family or, a daughter of good family, whoever has faith, abiding once in the eight-limbed upavasatha, upon separation from the body, is born equal to the gods of the Four Great Kings, that is the place. Abide, I realized from this that relying on the bliss of the gods, the kingdom of humans is inferior, thus it was declared. One hundred years of humans is one day and night for the Thirty-three Gods, fifteen days of that day and night is half a month, thirty days is one month, twelve months is one year, and the heavenly year calculated in that way
