The Sutra of the Abiding of the Noble One. The Sutra of the Abiding of the Noble One. This is called the Sutra of the Abiding of the Noble One. I prostrate to all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. Thus I have heard: At one time, the Blessed One was dwelling in the land of the Shakyas, in the grove of the Nyagrodha tree. Then, the great ascetic Shakya, walking and following on foot every day, deliberately went to where the Blessed One was. Having engaged in various pleasant and delightful conversations with the Blessed One, he sat down on one side. The Brahmin Abiding, knowing that he was sitting on one side, the Blessed One spoke to him thus: Abiding, why are you so emaciated and unsightly? With beard and, hair and, nails and, long hair, and a rough body, and speaking in a small voice. Abiding replied: Gautama, I am emaciated and unsightly because I fast every month. With beard and, hair and, nails and, long hair, and a rough body, and speaking in a small voice. Then, the Blessed One, knowing full well, spoke to the ascetic Abiding: Abiding, do you abide in the noble fast that possesses eight branches, and do you also diligently practice the methods of magical powers? Abiding replied: O Gautama, what will become of abiding in the noble fast that possesses eight branches, and diligently practicing the methods of magical powers? The Blessed One said: Brahmin, that will lead to enjoying the desires of gods and humans. Abiding replied: Gautama, what is called the noble fast that possesses eight branches? Gautama, how can one, by abiding in that which possesses eight branches, come to enjoy the desires of gods and humans? Abiding, a son or daughter of good family, possessing faith, desiring to abide in the noble fast that possesses eight branches, should rise early in the morning and go to a monk or, a Brahmin or, any other knowledgeable person, placing their upper garment on one shoulder, kneeling on their right knee, joining their palms, and uttering these words:
