Once, the Blessed One was dwelling in Shravasti, in the Jeta Grove, at Anathapindika's monastery. Then, the venerable Ananda went to where the Blessed One was, and having arrived, he bowed his head at the Blessed One's feet and sat down on one side. Having sat down on one side, the venerable Ananda said this to the Blessed One: "Blessed One, what merit is gained by sweeping? What merit is gained by making a mandala? What merit is gained by taking refuge and observing the precepts? What merit is gained by the fingertips of the palms joined in reverence to the Tathagata? Blessed One, what is it that causes merit not to turn into samsara, not to be completely exhausted, but to attain nirvana that has not been experienced? What merit is gained by making an image of the Tathagata?" The Blessed One said: "Ananda, there are five benefits to sweeping. What are the five? Ananda, for example, it tames one's own mind, it tames the minds of others, the gods will rejoice, it creates and accumulates beautiful karma, and after the body is destroyed, one will be reborn among the gods in the happy realm of the heavens. Ananda, if someone makes a square mandala for the sake of the Tathagata, that person will become the sovereign lord of the northern Kuru continent, and after the body is destroyed, I declare that he will be reborn in the Heaven of the Thirty-Three. I say, from there one will be born among the gods of Tushita. Ananda, if someone with a respectful mind, shapes a mandala of the Buddha like the shape of a wheel, he will become the ruler of Jambudvipa, and after his body dies, he will be born among the gods of Paranirmita-vasavartin, I say. Ananda, if someone takes refuge in the Buddha, takes refuge in the Dharma, and takes refuge in the Sangha, and also receives and completely protects the bases of training, Ananda, I say that the merit of that root of virtue is immeasurable and countless. I say that all the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas cannot measure to the ultimate end of Nirvana. Then, the Blessed One, having understood the mind of the venerable Ananda, extended his tongue, which was like the petals of a red lotus, immaculate and with soft leaves, like vermilion, the leaves of the Ashoka tree, a thin copper plate, with water filling his face, all the way to the mandala of the hairline of his head, and then said to Ananda: "Ananda, have you seen this tongue speak lies, slander, harsh words, and idle talk?" Venerable one, no. Ananda, the Tathagatas, Arhats, Perfectly Awakened Ones speak the truth. Ananda, if someone joins their palms and prostrates to the Blessed One, the Tathagata, the Arhat, the Perfectly Awakened One, if they prostrate, I will completely accept and completely liberate those beings from suffering. I have little concern for those beings. Why is that? Ananda, because the Dharmadhatu of the Tathagata is extremely excellent. Since it is extremely excellent, even joining the palms will not be in vain, what need is there to mention giving and other actions? Ananda, look! If someone merely washes his own mouthwash, or merely washes a bowl, or merely washes a water filter, that is also meaningful. If he thinks like this: May all the beings living here be happy because of this.
