《The Noble Wondrous Dharma Discourse》 《The Noble Wondrous Dharma Discourse》 In Indian language: Arya Adbhuta Dharma Paryaya Nama. In Tibetan language: The Noble Wondrous Dharma Discourse. Homage to all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas! Thus I have heard, at one time, the Blessed One was dwelling in Rajagrha (present-day Rajgir in Bihar) at the Bamboo Grove, the Kalandaka's residence. Then, the venerable Ananda, in the morning, having put on his robes and lower garments, and carrying his bowl, entered Rajagrha for alms. As the venerable Ananda was sequentially going for alms in the city of Rajagrha, in one direction he saw a multi-storied house with eighty doors, painted with colors, adorned with umbrellas, victory banners, and streamers, and hung with many silk ribbons. He thought to himself: Whichever faithful son or daughter of good family has built such a multi-storied house and offered it to the Sangha of monks from the four directions; or, having built a stupa of the Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Awakened One, who has completely passed into nirvana, the size of an Emblica fruit, erected a central pole the size of a needle tip, raised an umbrella the size of a camphor leaf, fashioned an image the size of a barley grain, and placed relics the size of mustard seeds, which of these two would have the greater merit? He also thought: The Teacher is manifest before me, the Sugata is manifest before me, I should report this matter to the Blessed One, and I shall act according to what the Blessed One teaches me. Then, the venerable Ananda, having finished his alms round in Rajagrha, having completed his meal, putting away his alms food, setting aside his robes and bowl, washing his feet, went to where the Blessed One was, and upon arriving, bowed his head at the feet of the Blessed One, and sat down on one side. Having sat down on one side, the venerable Ananda said this to the Blessed One: Venerable One, this morning

I also thought to myself: The Teacher is before my eyes, the Sugata is before my eyes. I should report this matter to the Blessed One and act according to the Blessed One's instructions. I should report this matter to the Blessed One, and with compassion, may the Blessed One explain this matter to me in detail. Having said this, the Blessed One spoke to the venerable Ananda, saying: Ananda, it is good, good indeed, that you think to ask the Tathagata about this matter, for the benefit of many beings, for the happiness of many beings, out of compassion for the world, for the benefit and happiness of gods and humans! Ananda, therefore, listen well and keep it in mind, and I will explain it to you. Ananda, the land of Jambudvipa ('dzam bu gling) is seven thousand yojanas in circumference and also seven thousand yojanas in width, wide in the north and shaped like a cart yoke in the south. Whichever faithful son or daughter of a noble family makes it of the nature of the seven precious things, for those who have entered the stream, those who return once, and those who do not return,
