The lifespan of the present is one kalpa, and death in the intermediate state exists. The foolish person Devadatta split the Sangha, and with malicious intent drew blood from the Tathagata's body, and also because a Bhikkhuni Arhat was killed, he was born in the great suffering Avici hell with his own body. Then, the Blessed One then taught in verses: For those who live appropriately by the Dharma taught by the noble ones, relying on sinful views, whatever evil mind slanders, like the fruit of a thorny ray, that will destroy the fruit. Good should be spoken, evil should not be spoken. Speaking good will become good, speaking evil will become shameful, if speaking, speak good, speaking evil will be destroyed. Children speak evil, the noble ones do not. Here, going to the evil realms, because too much karma has been done, those karmas will cause them to be born in Avici hell. Bhikkhus, the lifespan of the Brahma host gods is half a kalpa, and death in the intermediate state exists. Bhikkhus, the lifespan of the Brahma attendants gods can live for three-quarters of a kalpa, and death in the intermediate state exists. Bhikkhus, the lifespan of the Great Brahma gods can live for one kalpa, and death in the intermediate state exists. Bhikkhus, the lifespan of the gods of limited light can live for two kalpas, and death in the intermediate state exists. Bhikkhus, the lifespan of the gods of immeasurable light can live for four kalpas, and death in the intermediate state exists. Bhikkhus, the lifespan of the gods of clear light can live for eight kalpas, and death in the intermediate state exists. Bhikkhus, the lifespan of the gods of limited virtue can live for sixteen kalpas, and death in the intermediate state exists. Bhikkhus, the lifespan of the gods of immeasurable virtue can live for thirty-two kalpas, and death in the intermediate state exists. Bhikkhus, the lifespan of the gods of increasing virtue can live for sixty-four kalpas, and death in the intermediate state exists. Bhikkhus, the lifespan of the cloudless gods can live for one hundred and twenty-five kalpas,

Death in the bardo exists. Monks, the lifespan of the gods of the Well-born is two hundred and fifty kalpas, and death in the bardo exists. Monks, the lifespan of the gods of Great Fruit is five hundred kalpas, and death in the bardo exists. Monks, the lifespan of the non-conscious beings and the non-great gods is one thousand kalpas, and death in the bardo exists. Monks, the lifespan of the gods of No Heat is two thousand kalpas, and death in the bardo exists. Monks, the lifespan of the gods of Excellent View is four thousand kalpas, and death in the bardo exists. Monks, the lifespan of the gods of Abundant Appearance is eight thousand kalpas, and death in the bardo exists. Monks, the lifespan of the gods of Akanistha is sixteen thousand kalpas, and death in the bardo exists. Monks, the lifespan of the gods who approach the sphere of infinite space is twenty thousand kalpas, and death in the bardo exists. Monks, the lifespan of the gods who approach the sphere of infinite consciousness is forty thousand kalpas, and death in the bardo exists. Monks, the lifespan of the gods who approach the sphere of nothingness is sixty thousand kalpas, and death in the bardo exists. Monks, the lifespan of the gods who approach the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception is eighty thousand kalpas, and death in the bardo exists. Monks, thus from the great hell of Avici to the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception, these are, monks, the peak of existence, these are the peak of existence. These are the arising of existence, these are the appearance of sentient beings of the five realms coming, going, staying, dying, and being born. Be content with the arising of existence. I do not praise even a small manifestation of existence, not even for a moment. Why is that? Because the manifestation of existence is suffering, like impurity is little.

Even weeping is not pleasing, what need to mention more? Thus, I do not praise even the slightest manifestation of existence, not even for a moment. Why is that? Because, monks, manifesting existence is suffering. Those childish ordinary beings who lack learning repeatedly run and intensely run in the cycle of the five realms, again and again into the hells, again and again into the animals, again and again into the evil destinies and evil paths. Monks, therefore, you should train yourselves in this way: you should strive for the cessation of existence and not manifest existence. Monks, you should train yourselves in this way. After the Blessed One had spoken thus, those monks rejoiced and greatly praised what the Blessed One had said. Thus concludes the Sutra on the Limit of Life.
