Once, the Blessed One was dwelling in Śrāvastī, in the Jeta Grove, in the Garden of Anāthapiṇḍada. Then, the Blessed One addressed the monks: Monks, do you wish to hear the limit of the lifespan of sentient beings? Blessed One, the time is right! Well-Gone One, the time is right! Blessed One, if the limit of the lifespan of sentient beings is heard from the Blessed One, the monks will uphold it. Monks, therefore listen well, pay close attention, and keep it in mind, and I shall tell you. Monks, the lifespan of beings in hell, at its longest, is one kalpa, but there is death in between. Monks, the lifespan of animals at its longest, is one kalpa, but there is death in between. Monks, thirty human days are one day for the pretas. Thirty days are one month, twelve months are one year. The lifespan of the pretas, calculated in this way, can last five hundred years. If calculated according to human years, it is fifty thousand years. But there is death in between. Then, the Blessed One spoke in verse at that time: How the extremely large body stands erect, lips and eyes are dry, extremely painful. Covered with its own hair, mouth open, looking at the sky, nose is extremely thin like a needle. Like a pile of bones, body naked, covered with its own hair. Ugly in appearance, standing erect, skull covered. Hunger, thirst, and fatigue extremely torment, crying and wailing, running everywhere. Wretchedly uttering sounds, experiencing the feeling of suffering. Jealous of each other, stingy, relying on this, having committed sinful deeds here. Those beings are born in the world of pretas.
