is thorough. Furthermore, one knows and sees as they are the three realms: the past realm, the future realm, and the present realm. Furthermore, one knows and sees as they are the three realms: the inferior realm, the intermediate realm, and the superior realm. Furthermore, one knows and sees as they are the three realms: the virtuous realm, the non-virtuous realm, and the unspecified realm. Furthermore, one knows and sees as they are the three realms: the realm of learning, the realm of non-learning, and the realm of neither learning nor non-learning. Furthermore, one knows and sees as they are the two realms: the realm with outflows and the realm without outflows. Furthermore, one knows and sees as they are the two realms: the conditioned realm and the unconditioned realm. Ananda, by this much, a wise person is wise in the realms. Venerable, to what extent is a wise person wise in the sense bases? Ananda, a wise person knows and sees as they are the twelve sense bases: the sense base of the eye and the sense base of forms, the sense base of the ear and the sense base of sounds, the sense base of the nose and the sense base of smells, the sense base of the tongue and the sense base of tastes, the sense base of the body and the sense base of tangibles, the sense base of the mind and the sense base of dharmas. Ananda, by this much, a wise person is wise in the sense bases. Venerable, to what extent is a wise person wise in dependent origination? Ananda, a wise person knows the arising and ceasing of dependent origination in accordance with the law, like this: this being, that arises; this arising, that is born. Like this, with ignorance as a condition, there is action; with action as a condition, there is consciousness; with consciousness as a condition, there is name and form; with name and form as a condition, there are the six sense bases; with the six sense bases as a condition, there is contact; with contact as a condition, there is feeling; with feeling as a condition, there is craving; with craving as a condition, there is grasping; with grasping as a condition, there is existence; with existence as a condition, there is birth.

Conditioned by birth, there arise aging and death, as well as sorrow, lamentation, pain, distress, and disturbance, and only this great mass of suffering arises. For example, because this does not exist, this does not arise; because this ceases, this ceases. Thus, because ignorance ceases, volitional formations cease; because volitional formations cease, consciousness ceases; because consciousness ceases, name and form cease; because name and form cease, the six sense sources cease; because the six sense sources cease, contact ceases; because contact ceases, feeling ceases; because feeling ceases, craving ceases; because craving ceases, grasping ceases; because grasping ceases, becoming ceases; because becoming ceases, birth ceases; because birth ceases, aging and death, as well as sorrow, lamentation, pain, distress, and disturbance cease, and only this great mass of suffering ceases, knowing and seeing as it truly is. Ānanda, it is only by this much that one is wise in dependent origination. Reverend, by how much is one wise in what is possible and what is impossible? Ānanda, a wise person knows and sees what is possible as possible, and what is impossible as impossible, as it truly is. Ānanda, this is not a possibility, nor is there an opportunity, that the ripening of deeds done wrongly by body, speech, and mind, such as what is desired, lovely, delightful, and agreeable, will manifestly be accomplished; this is not a possibility. This is a possibility, that the ripening of deeds done wrongly by body, speech, and mind, such as what is not desired, not lovely, not delightful, and not agreeable, will manifestly be accomplished; this is a possibility.
