The Mahāyāna Sūtra Called "Ocean of Dharma" The Mahāyāna Sūtra Called "Ocean of Dharma" In Sanskrit: Dharmasamudranāmamahāyānasūtra In Tibetan: The Mahāyāna Sūtra Called "Ocean of Dharma" Thus I have heard. At one time, the Blessed One was dwelling on Mount Potalaka on an island in the ocean, surrounded and attended by many irreversible sons of the Buddhas. Then, the Blessed One said to the Bodhisattva Mahāsattva Lokanatha: "Noble son, ask whatever questions about the Dharma you wish." Then, Lokanatha, the Bodhisattva, having attained liberation through unobstructed love, said to the Blessed One: "Venerable One, how does one, as a youth, conquer the armies of Māra? How does one who has just generated the mind of enlightenment not cling to or rely on desires, be without pride, possess wisdom and skillful means, and be deeply devoted to emptiness, thereby abandoning existence and non-existence, and through examining what is not true, transmigrate countless times? How does one go forth into the Dharma and Vinaya that are well-spoken, and perfectly attain full ordination? How does hearing the non-dual Dharma, having transcended the various different phenomena of beings, and the mind, intellect, and consciousness that rely on and enter into the lower realms, constitute true going forth? Whichever sentient being goes forth in this way is truly gone forth. If, having gone forth, one's discipline, conduct, livelihood, views, and thoughts decline, then even shaving the head and beard is meaningless, because holding onto defilements, one is driven by those defilements to fall into the lower realms. The faith that I have given is liberation through reason. A bhikṣu who does not abandon diligence does not abandon form, nor does he abandon feeling, perception, formation, or consciousness. The five aggregates are distinct, and by examining their nature as a whole, one sees them as impermanent, suffering, empty, and without self, and without regarding the gods of the realms and sources in an invisible way, one generates supreme joy.

Therefore, one should always meditate. Devoid of essence, having pustules, possessing pain, having defects, and being the nature of deceiving others, refuting these as well, one should practice in the manner of non-apprehension. Whatever clinging to the body with the body, loving the body, believing in self in the body, and attachment to the body, all those should be completely abandoned. Whoever is such a monk has gone forth into the well-spoken Dharma and Vinaya, and is truly perfected by taking the full ordination with faith. Such a monk is a worthy recipient of offerings for gods and all beings in the world. Then, Maitreya Bodhisattva said to Lokanatha Bodhisattva: "For what reason did the Blessed One say that whoever has transcended various different dharmas and attained the dharmas that transcend the world is one who has gone forth into the well-spoken Dharma and Vinaya and is truly perfected by taking the full ordination? Others, although they have gone forth and taken full ordination, are self-deceivers, like a mouse on a cliff, neither a bird nor a domestic animal, nor a renunciate. A foolish person should regard them in that way. Noble son, those various different dharmas are like illusions, and one cannot escape from them. The various different dharmas are not yet complete, so it is difficult to escape from them. The realm of sentient beings is neither outside nor inside, because neither is apprehended. Whatever is the nature of the realm of sentient beings is the nature of various different dharmas, and it is difficult to escape from them. Alas! Son of the Victorious One, the Blessed One said that the monk who has transcended various different dharmas and attained the dharmas that transcend the world has gone forth and is truly perfected by taking full ordination, and is a worthy recipient of offerings who practices giving with faith. Alas! Son of the Victorious One, if there is no place to rely on, how can one attain the dharmas that transcend the world? If one can attain them, then it has become an object of focus. The nature of the Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Awakened One is without focus, and the Blessed One also
