Having seen the fire, they are extremely frightened, uttering loud cries of despair. They deeply regret their past evil deeds, but it is of no use. This body is very large and youthful, possessing strong sensations and a powerful form. Some have their own bodies burned into piles of fire. Some are crushed by iron city houses. They roll and writhe, and are burned from all directions. Some are placed in large iron containers, tormented like gruel being cooked with mustard seeds and boiling water. Some are sawed apart like saws, or pounded on anvils. Some guard dwellings and houses, only to be burned. There are also fire embers, ashes, water, and so on. The many sufferings are unimaginable. One hundred and eighty million human years is but a single day and night in some hells. They remain there for eons. Although they desire to die, they cannot. Some beings whose karma is not exhausted, when the world is destroyed, pass through various worlds and are born where there is no destruction. Born as pretas (hungry ghosts), they are tormented by hunger and thirst, with heads the size of mountains, mouths the size of needle eyes, necks as thin as threads, and bellies as vast as lands. Even when they see food and drink, it is guarded by others, or they only see filth such as pus, blood, and vomit. Some, even when they eat, it turns into boiling bile. Born as animals, they devour each other, are involuntarily driven, whipped, and beaten, or slaughtered by others, suffering from ignorance and delusion. Even when born as humans, while in the womb, when the mother is full, it feels like being squeezed between rocks. When she is hungry, it feels like being thrown to wolves. When she moves violently, it feels like being pounded on an anvil. At birth, the skin is peeled off, rougher than being dragged along a wall. They suffer from heat rashes, boils, hunger, thirst, and pain in their limbs. Even when grown up, they suffer from the hardships and poverty of farming, separation from loved ones, conquest by enemies, debt, and various sufferings such as hunger, thirst, and cold. The poor suffer because they cannot find a way out. The wealthy are exhausted from maintaining their livelihood. Plowing fields, doing business, engaging in various activities are all filled with suffering. Such sufferings are unimaginable. The root of suffering is mostly related to food and clothing. The enjoyment of happiness in this world is mostly the cause of falling into the lower realms in the future. Born as asuras (demigods), they suffer from arrogance, jealousy, anger, fighting, and other emotions. Even when born as gods, they face death and falling from

Me. Suffering from the five signs of death and the power of conditioned existence. Aging is also such suffering. White hair and wrinkles accumulate, unwilling to be seen by others. Mouth and nose drip, hands and feet all tremble. Though the mind remembers, the body has no strength. All the children think it would be better to die. Even if advised, they don't listen, and power is lost. Some say the old hag is dying, wipe her clean quickly. Some take up sticks and beat her. Thus, seeing and hearing, one cannot die even if one wants to. The sick are so miserable. The four great elements of the body are unbalanced. Wind, bile, and phlegm combine, causing the body to suffer. Even seeing enjoyment, there is no desire for it. The body's strength is lost, unable to rise. The beautiful radiance is lost, like a hungry ghost. The dying are also so miserable. Relatives and friends wail. There is no room to listen, look, or think about it. Severing the vital point is like cutting with a weapon. Past deeds of friendship and enmity. Virtuous and non-virtuous actions appear like a dream. The messengers of Yama surround, extremely frightening. Terrified, one looks around everywhere. But seeing no one to protect or save. Extremely frightened, everywhere despondent. Where will I go? Unexpectedly, the bardo arises. This impermanent suffering is endless and long. From beginningless time until now. Until the noble path is attained, one always suffers. The king reported: World Honored One, this cycle of existence is so painful, what is it that possesses happiness and well-being? The World Honored One taught: Nirvana is perfect happiness and well-being. The king reported: How is it perfect happiness and well-being? The World Honored One taught: Nirvana is the best of peace and happiness. There is no conceptual thought, no self-grasping, and no afflictions. There is no hunger, thirst, cold, or heat from the three lower realms, etc. There is no suffering such as birth, old age, sickness, and death. The impermanent suffering of samsara is completely exhausted. As an activity, one only engages in benefiting others. Power and miraculous abilities are inconceivable. After teaching in this way, King Zukchen Nyingpo arose with aversion to samsara, abandoned the kingdom like spittle and ashes, and devoted himself to practicing nirvana. That's how it happened.

The Blessed One spoke thus: Great King, well done, well done! Among all footprints, the elephant's footprint is the most excellent. Among all flowers, the white lotus is the most excellent. Among all thoughts, the thought of impermanence is the most excellent. Among all ideas, generating revulsion from samsara is the most excellent. Great King, generating revulsion from samsara is good! Generating disgust is good! Attachment is samsara, non-attachment is nirvana. After the Blessed One spoke thus, King Rupagarbha and all others rejoiced and praised the words spoken by the Blessed One. Thus concludes the Mahayana Sutra called "The Advice to King Rupagarbha." Translated, revised, and finalized by the Indian Abbot Danashila and the monk Yeshe De. "The Advice to the King," a Mahayana Sutra.
