The Noble Teaching on the Aspects of Enlightenment, called the Great Vehicle Sutra. The Noble Teaching on the Aspects of Enlightenment, called the Great Vehicle Sutra. In Sanskrit: Arya Bodhipaksa Nirdesa Nama Mahayana Sutra. In Tibetan: The Noble Teaching on the Aspects of Enlightenment, called the Great Vehicle Sutra. Homage to all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas! Thus have I heard at one time. The Blessed One was dwelling in Rajagriha (present-day Rajgir in Bihar) on Vulture Peak Mountain, together with a great community of monks, about five hundred monks, and with Bodhisattva Mahasattvas such as Maitreya and Manjushri. Then, the Blessed One spoke to Manjushri, who had become a youth, saying: Manjushri, because of the four inversions, sentient beings whose minds have become inverted do not see the four noble truths as they truly are, and therefore they do not escape from this unreal cycle of existence. After he had spoken thus, Manjushri, who had become a youth, said to the Blessed One: Blessed One, if one clings in such a way, please explain how sentient beings do not escape from samsara. The Blessed One said: Manjushri, sentient beings do not escape from samsara because they cling to self and what belongs to self. Why is that? Manjushri, whoever truly sees self and other will arise from that and engage in manifest actions. Manjushri, ignorant ordinary people who lack learning do not fully understand that all phenomena are completely and utterly extinguished, so they cling to self and other. Having clung, they manifest the three kinds of actions of body, speech, and mind. They fabricate what does not exist, thinking, 'I am desire, I am hatred, I am delusion.' If they go forth into the teachings of the Tathagata, they think to themselves: 'I am virtuous, I am practicing celibacy, I shall escape from samsara, I shall attain complete extinction, I shall be liberated from suffering.' They think, 'These dharmas are virtuous, and those dharmas are non-virtuous.'

He contemplates. He thinks, 'These dharmas are to be abandoned. These dharmas are to be manifested. Suffering is to be fully known. The origin is to be abandoned. Cessation is to be manifested. The path is to be cultivated.' He contemplates, 'All conditioned things are impermanent. All conditioned things are suffering. All conditioned things are always burning. I should flee from all conditioned things.' By contemplating in this way, he is endowed with aversion that precedes signs. Perceptions that precede signs and mental activities arise. He thinks, 'Whoever fully knows these dharmas fully knows suffering.' He thinks, 'I should abandon the origin.' He is afflicted by all dharmas and does not realize it. He is afraid. He trembles. He will tremble. He thinks, 'Whatever manifests those dharmas and whatever afflicts those dharmas is the abandonment of the origin.' He thinks, 'I should manifest cessation.' He examines those dharmas and knows that it is cessation. He thinks, 'These are the manifestation of cessation.' He thinks, 'I should cultivate the path.' He goes alone to a solitary place and attains calm abiding by attending to those dharmas. By attending to aversion and attaining calm abiding, his mind clashes with all dharmas. He separates. He retreats. Having retreated, he generates a mind of displeasure. He thinks, 'I am liberated from all suffering. What else should I do further? I am an Arhat.' Knowing this himself, at the time of his death, he sees rebirth as it really is, and he doubts the enlightenment of the Buddha, and has dualistic thoughts and hesitation. Having died with a mind fallen into hesitation, he is born in the great hells of sentient beings. Why? Because he has discriminated all unarisen dharmas. Then, Manjushri, who had become a youth, said to the Blessed One, 'Blessed One...'

How should one view the four noble truths? The Buddha replied: Manjushri, whoever sees all conditioned phenomena as unborn, that one fully knows suffering. Whoever sees all dharmas as unarisen, that one has abandoned the origin. Whoever sees all dharmas as utterly pacified, that one has realized cessation. Whoever sees all dharmas as without substance, that one has cultivated the path. Manjushri, whoever sees these four noble truths in this way knows that these dharmas are virtuous, these dharmas are non-virtuous, these dharmas are to be abandoned, these dharmas are to be realized. Suffering is to be fully known, the origin is to be abandoned, cessation is to be realized, the path is to be cultivated. One does not think or discriminate in this way. Why is that? Because the childish ordinary beings have attachment, hatred, and delusion, and that one sees that these dharmas are unborn, and sees all that is untrue as imputation and elaboration. Therefore, one does not take up any dharma, nor does one abandon it. One's mind is not attached to the three realms, because one sees all the three realms as unborn, like an illusion, like a dream, like an echo, like a mirage. Because one sees the nature of all dharmas in that way, one will become free from attachment and anger towards all sentient beings. Why is that? Because one does not perceive the dharma that causes attachment and anger. Therefore, with a mind equal to space, one does not truly see even the Buddha, nor does one truly see the Dharma and the Sangha. One does not truly see all dharmas as empty, so one does not doubt any dharma. Because one does not doubt, one will not cling. Because one does not cling, one will attain nirvana without clinging. Manjushri, the monk Subhuti, knowing all dharmas in that way, does not come to bow at the feet of the Tathagata. Why is that? If self is not perceived, what need is there to perceive the Tathagata? That is not the place. Then, the Blessed One
