Should be relied upon, should be meditated upon, should be increased. Therefore, one should avoid encountering monks who lack wisdom. One should not be intimate with nuns. One should also reduce desires. One should always examine one's own faults individually. One should not examine the faults of others. Even parents should not be trusted, let alone those of other castes. One should be very disciplined. One should be a benefactor of the Dharma of peace. One should be skilled in objects of focus. One should dwell in secluded places. One should not speak of agreeable things to others, let alone disagreeable things. Therefore, one should settle the mind closely on these Dharmas, and thereby examine the profound Dharmas individually. What are those profound Dharmas that should be examined? One should examine individually, thinking that the eye is impermanent. One should also examine its arising and ceasing individually. Therefore, examining arising and ceasing individually is contemplating non-existence individually. Why is that? Because what is called the eye does not exist. The eye, form, and eye consciousness are not objects of focus, but non-existence is the object of focus. Why is that? Because all Dharmas are without objects of focus. Therefore, one should not contemplate the basis of the ear. One should not contemplate the basis of the nose, tongue, body, and mind. One should not contemplate any basis whatsoever. Having done that, what does one contemplate? Likewise, one should also strive to make all Dharmas empty. Striving in that way will purify the aggregate of morality completely. It will purify the aggregate of concentration and the aggregate of wisdom completely. One will attain the fruit of stream-entry. One will attain the fruit of once-returner, the fruit of non-returner, and the state of Arhat. Such absence of busyness is the first stage of the Hearer, and they will attain the exhaustion of defilements. So, what is the pretense of being like a monk? In this country, a monk clings to himself, thinking it is 'I'. That is connected with the aggregate of morality not being completely perfect. Cherishing Dharma robes, cherishing the begging bowl, cherishing possessions.

Indeed, it refers to abandoning silence and possessing bedding, cushions, and grand hospitality items that lead to falling into evil destinies. They associate with women, associate with nuns, and associate with those trusted by kings. Once they associate with these people, they continuously focus their minds on various objects with their eyes. By generating thoughts in this way, they become completely defiled by afflictions. If one possesses a mind completely defiled by afflictions, such a place exists. They either commit heavy sins or commit minor sins and dwell there. This ruler of the land is disguised as a monk. Why is the ruler of the land disguised as a monk? Because the one disguised as a monk, the bedding and cushions given by the Tathagata, whatever bedding and cushions are inhabited by ordinary practitioners, if that foolish person abandons them, they become attached to Dharma robes and possessions, associating with women and associating with householders. Then, for that foolish person who associates, where would there be the conduct of a practitioner? Moreover, they also slander and revile the profound Dharma. Even if they have heard it, they utter words that are not praiseworthy. They utter words that do not praise monasteries. They only utter praises for those desires that their minds greatly enjoy. They only utter praises for those jokes that their minds greatly enjoy. And they utter words that do not praise any monastic dwellings. Regarding those sutras spoken by the Tathagata, that those who live at home and those who have renounced, and that gatherings should not occur, they abandon those sutras, not desiring the conduct of a practitioner, not desiring the possessions of a monk. They dwell alone, teaching Dharma to women, and they also instruct others in such matters. Why is that? Because the Tathagata said that those people are thieves of the Dharma. Because they abandon individual liberation vows, dwell alone, and teach Dharma to women. Those foolish people are pretenders, pretending by shaving their heads and pretending by wearing saffron robes. By what cause do they pretend?
