Not self, not existent, not non-existent, not thus, not different, not the undeluded suchness, and not even the undeluded suchness, but seeing things as they truly are. The Tathagata does not view the three realms as seen by individual children. The Tathagata possesses the manifest Dharma in this place and is of the nature of non-forgetfulness. All that the Tathagata speaks is true and not false. Furthermore, in order to generate roots of virtue for beings with different behaviors, different thoughts, and different practices of perception and discrimination, he teaches many kinds of Dharma with many kinds of objects. Sons of good families, whatever the Tathagata does, that is what the Tathagata does. Having attained complete enlightenment since a long time ago, the lifespan of the Tathagata is immeasurable. The Tathagata does not pass into complete Nirvana, but always abides, yet for the sake of taming, he also shows passing into complete Nirvana. Sons of good families, I have not yet reached the measure of the lifespan in which I completely perfected the conduct of the Bodhisattva in the past. Sons of good families, I still need twice as many billions of nayutas of kalpas to complete my lifespan. Sons of good families, although I do not pass into complete Nirvana in this way, I say that I pass into complete Nirvana. Why is that? Sons of good families, it is because I use these methods to ripen sentient beings. If I do not pass into Nirvana and stay in the world for too long and am constantly seen, then sentient beings who have not done roots of virtue, who are poor and without merit, who are greedy for desires, who are blind, and who are covered by the net of many views, will think that the Tathagata abides in the world and will develop the thought that he is easy to obtain, and will not generate the thought that he is difficult to obtain. They will think that the Tathagata is close to us and arises from the three realms, so they will not strive diligently and will not generate the thought that the Tathagata is rare.

Thinking thus, sons of good family, therefore, the Tathagata, with skillful means, says to the monks, "The appearance of the Tathagatas is extremely rare." What is the reason for this? It is because these sentient beings, in many billions of hundreds of thousands of myriads of kalpas, may or may not see the Tathagata. Sons of good family, therefore, I, focusing on them, say to the monks, "The appearance of the Tathagatas is rare." When they know that the appearance of the Tathagatas is extremely rare, they will generate a sense of wonder and a sense of sorrow. Even if they do not see the Tathagata, they will thirst to see the Tathagata. Knowing that their roots of virtue, which focus on and contemplate the Tathagata, are for the sake of long-term benefit, welfare, and happiness, the Tathagata, although not passing into complete nirvana, speaks of passing into complete nirvana for the sake of taming sentient beings. Sons of good family, whatever is said in this way is a category of the Tathagata's teachings, and the Tathagata does not speak falsely. Sons of good family, for example, there is a physician who is skilled at completely pacifying all diseases, intelligent, compassionate, and very outstanding. That physician has many sons, ten, twenty, thirty, forty, fifty, a hundred, or a thousand. The physician goes away, and all of his sons drink either feces poison or arrow poison. They are afflicted and tormented by the painful feelings of the feces poison and arrow poison, and they roll on the ground. Then, their father, the physician, comes from elsewhere and sees his sons weakened by the pain of the feces poison or arrow poison. Some are delirious, and some are not delirious, but they are all weakened by the pain. Seeing their father, they are overjoyed and say to him, "Father, are you well and unharmed? Did you have a good journey? Please heal us and liberate us from this feces poison or arrow poison that destroys our bodies."

The father said, "Please grant us life." Then, that doctor saw those children exhausted by suffering, tormented and afflicted by illness, rolling on the ground. So, he collected great medicines that had color, had scent, and had taste, crushed them on a stone, and made those children drink them, saying, "Children, drink this great medicine that has color, has scent, and has taste! Sons of good family, if you drink this good medicine, you will quickly be freed from plant poison or arrow poison, and become happy and healthy." After he said this, those sons of the doctor whose minds were not deranged quickly drank the medicine after seeing its color, smelling its scent, and tasting its flavor. And they were freed from all diseases, in all ways. Those sons whose minds were deranged praised their father, saying, "Father, are you well and without harm? Are you doing well? Please heal us." They spoke these words, but did not drink the medicine that was given to them. Why was that? It was because those whose minds were deranged did not like the color of the medicine, nor did they like its scent, nor did they like its taste. Then, that physician thought to himself, "Because my sons' minds have been deranged by plant poison or arrow poison, they cannot drink this medicine, but they praise me. I should use skillful means to make these sons drink the medicine." Then, the doctor, wanting to make the children drink the medicine by skillful means, said, "Sons of good family, I am old and decrepit, and the time of my death is near. Children, do not grieve! Do not be unhappy! If you want this great medicine, drink this medicine!" Thus, he admonished the children with skillful means, and then went to another place, and after leaving, he made those sick children hear the news that "I am dead." At that time, they became very sad and wailed greatly, saying, "Our father, the protector who raised us, the only one who loved us, has also died. Therefore, now we have become without a protector." They saw themselves as without a protector, saw themselves as without refuge, and then
