Eighth, the chapter on prostration. Eighth, the chapter on prostration. Volume Four. Then, the Blessed One spoke to Ananda again, "Ananda, if some sentient beings hear the words of the Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, or hear the sound of their names, Ananda, I tell you that for them, it will not be meaningless until Nirvana. Ananda, what is the meaning of the phrase 'I prostrate to the Buddhas'?" Thus spoke the Blessed One. The Venerable Ananda said to the Blessed One, "Blessed One, the Blessed One is the root of all dharmas. Blessed One is the guide. Blessed One is the teacher. Blessed One, please explain this meaning well to the monks. Having heard it directly from the Blessed One, they will understand the meaning accordingly." After he had spoken thus, the Blessed One said to the Venerable Ananda, "Therefore, Ananda, listen very well and keep it in mind, and I will explain. "Venerable Ananda replied, "So be it, Blessed One." Then the Venerable Ananda listened to the Blessed One. The Blessed One said to him, "Ananda, here, the meaning of the phrase 'I prostrate to the Buddha' is this: for example, the sound of the names of the Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, is not meaningless. Ananda, thus, it is said that saying 'I prostrate to the Buddha' is not meaningless. Ananda, therefore, in order to widely understand and perfect this meaning, and so that sons and daughters of good families who hear the names of the Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, will have a greater interest in this teaching, I will give you an example. Ananda, in the past, in a past time, many groups of merchants entered the great ocean together. When they reached the middle of the ocean, the great ship was seized by makaras (sea monsters). Ananda, then, the large group of merchants became frightened and terrified, their hair stood on end, and they were afraid of the fear of death, without protectors, without refuge, without support.

Having become helpless, they wept and wailed, uttering laments, each in their own way, lamenting in various ways. Alas, how delightful is Jambudvipa! Alas, how wonderful is the world of life! Alas, how difficult it is to obtain a human form! Alas, we will be separated from our parents! Alas, sons and wives! Alas, friends and retinues of wives, all will be unseen! Thus they wept and lamented. Enduring suffering and discomfort, they paid homage to various deities, desiring to live. Shariputra, then in that assembly of merchants, there was a wise and eloquent captain, upright in mind, who had great faith in the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha. He did not hold to other gods and had faith in the Blessed Buddha. He said to all the merchants, "O merchants, do you wish to escape from this great fear and terror? If you wish to be reborn in a happy realm, in higher realms, come here! Gather together and unite, and as I speak, so shall you each speak in turn." They said, "Captain, you speak, and we will repeat as you speak." Shariputra, then that captain draped his garment over one shoulder, placed his right knee on the deck of the great ship, and with a mind focused on the Buddha, uttered a great sound: "Homage to the Buddhas! Givers of fearlessness, endowed with great compassion, loving all beings, homage to the Buddhas!" Thus he paid homage to the Buddha. The assembly of merchants also immediately joined their palms and spoke with one voice: "Homage to the Buddhas! Homage to the Blessed Buddha, endowed with great compassion, loving all beings!" Thus they spoke. Shariputra, then that crocodile heard the sound of the Buddha. Having heard the words "Homage to the Buddhas," it gained great joy and a mind free from harm, and it closed its mouth again. Shariputra, then that captain, together with the ship, safely escaped. Those great ships were safe and their wishes were fulfilled, and they returned to Jambudvipa. Water

That sea monster also experienced happiness upon hearing the Buddha's voice, and from then on, it did not eat other living beings. Because of this, it starved and decided to die right there. As soon as it decided to die, it passed away from the animal realm and was born with the same fortune as humans. It developed faith in the Dharma and Vinaya spoken by the Tathagata, and thus renounced household life and became a renunciate. After becoming a renunciate, it relied on, attended to, and revered virtuous friends, thereby attaining the state of an Arhat. Having directly realized the six supernormal knowledges, it passed into the realm of Nirvana without remainder of aggregates. Ananda, consider how the sea monster, which was born in the animal realm, upon hearing the Buddha's voice, became the cause for being reborn as a human, the cause for becoming a renunciate, the cause for attaining the state of an Arhat, and the cause for passing into complete Nirvana. Ananda, consider how powerful is the hearing of the voice of the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, how powerful is the recitation of their names, and how powerful is the arising of faith. If even the sea monster, belonging to the realm of non-virtue and born in the animal realm, hearing the Buddha's voice did not become meaningless, what need is there to mention being reborn as a human? Ananda, you should understand in this way through this example: just as hearing the Buddha's voice of the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, does not become meaningless, what need is there to mention other roots of virtue generated towards the Buddha? Ananda, doing something small accomplishes something small; doing something complete accomplishes something complete. Upon what basis did I say that? The so-called "doing something small" refers to the root of virtue arising from faith, which is of limited duration, generating the seed of a Shravaka, that is, it will become a Shravaka. That root of virtue makes the seed of a Shravaka complete. Doing something for oneself means generating one's own root of virtue, thereby making the seed of a Pratyekabuddha complete. Ananda, based on this, I said, "This is doing something small." Ananda, the so-called "doing something complete" is Ananda.
