Please do not enter into sorrow! May the Sugata completely not enter into sorrow! O Bhagavan, for the benefit of many beings, for happiness, for love for the world, for the sake of the benefit, welfare, and happiness of gods and humans, please remain for an eon! After making this request, the Bhagavan said to the venerable Rāhula: Rāhula, with what qualities does the Tathāgata, Arhat, Perfectly Awakened One, come to be counted among the noble ones in the world? Rāhula, are those qualities exhausted, old, born, going, coming, arising, ceasing, existing, decaying, abiding, dwelling, sleeping, possessing, or not possessing? They will not change. Why is that? Rāhula, those qualities are permanent, utterly unarisen, utterly unborn, utterly unceasing, utterly empty, utterly unborn, utterly without self-nature, peaceful, countless, without basis, unspeakable, not the path of language. Rāhula, this is the Dharma-nature of the Buddhas, the Bhagavat: namely, utterly abiding, utterly peaceful, utterly solitary, utterly free from desire, utterly ceased, utterly unmixed, utterly uncreated, utterly inexhaustible. Rāhula, considering these, I say this: whether the Tathāgatas appear or do not appear, the Dharma-nature of all dharmas is permanent, the Dharma-nature, the Dharma-determination, the Dharma-freedom from desire, the self-nature of Dharma is permanent. Rāhula, the Tathāgata is completely not entering into Nirvana while holding the aggregate of morality, not the aggregate of concentration, not the aggregate of wisdom, not the aggregate of liberation, but completely not entering into Nirvana while holding the aggregate of the wisdom of seeing liberation. Rāhula, do not be displeased, do not lament, do not generate sorrow. Rāhula, all conditioned phenomena are impermanent, unstable, without breath, non-eternal, are of the nature of decay and change, Rāhula.

Therefore, one should develop aversion to all conditioned phenomena, be without attachment, and be liberated. This "Chapter on Disciples" has been revealed to you. In this "Chapter on Disciples," after the Blessed One spoke the chapter on seeing the truth, about sixty elder monks, without taking anything, their minds were liberated from all defilements. Countless gods and humans, in the Dharma, arose the Dharma eye, without dust, without stain, and pure. Sixty-eight thousand Bodhisattvas obtained forbearance of the Dharma of non-arising. They all said in unison: Wonderful Buddha, wonderful Buddha! Wonderful is the Dharma of the Buddha, inconceivable! They praised continuously. They offered the Blessed One with Utpala flowers, lotuses, water lilies, and white lotuses. After offering, they said: May we also, in the future, appear in the world like this teacher! May we teach the Dharma in this way! May we attain Nirvana with the unsurpassed Nirvana, different from all the world, with this great Nirvana of the Buddha! After saying these words, those Bodhisattvas became silent. The fourth chapter, "Chapter on Disciples," is complete. Fourth Chapter, "Chapter on Disciples."
