Chanyan, go to see the Blessed One Shakyamuni Buddha. Go to pay your last respects, prostrate, and make offerings to the great Shakya King! Lest you regret it later. Chanyan, the Tathagata Shakyamuni Buddha is now lying on his right side like a lion in the grove of Sala trees, attended by the giants, and he also wishes to see you. Chanyan, you must be there! After saying this, the Blessed One, the Tathagata, the guide, said to the venerable Chanyan: "Blessed One, even the sound of the Tathagata, the Arhat, the perfectly enlightened Buddha Shakyamuni, passing into complete Nirvana, is unpleasant for me to hear. What need is there to mention seeing the Blessed One passing into complete Nirvana? Blessed One, hearing the sound of the Blessed One Shakyamuni Buddha, the Shakya King, passing into complete Nirvana, my body is exhausted. Blessed One, the precious sentient beings, wishing to benefit all the world, compassionately benefiting all the world, the lamp of all the world, incomparable to all the world, illuminating all the world, the eyes of all the world, illuminating with the great lamp of wisdom, how can I separate, depart, and not be with such a one tomorrow morning?" After saying this, the Blessed One, the Tathagata, the guide, said to the venerable Chanyan: "Chanyan, stop wailing and lamenting. Chanyan, didn't the Blessed One initially teach that all conditioned things are impermanent, all conditioned things are suffering, all phenomena are without self, and Nirvana is peace? Chanyan, the Blessed One also said: 'All conditioned things are impermanent, they are of the nature of arising and ceasing. Having arisen, they cease, and their cessation is bliss.'" Answer: "Blessed One, it is so. Sugata, it is so." The Blessed One said: "Blessed One, he will be separated from all lovely and pleasing things."

Aging, separation, parting, and destruction; no matter how long they exist, they are bound to decay. Haven't I taught this from the very beginning? He replied: Venerable One, it is so. Sugata, it is so. He taught: Rahula, whatever is born and arises, is conditioned, is thought of, arises from conceptualization, and arises dependently, how could those not perish? There is no such possibility. Then, the venerable Rahula, remembering the Tathagata, the Arhat, the perfectly enlightened Buddha, the teacher Shakyamuni, shed tears due to the power of the Dharma. "Tomorrow morning, I will not see the Venerable One being revered and teaching the Dharma in front of the Sangha of monks. Like Mount Meru, the king of mountains, appearing clearly from the ocean. Like the full moon surrounded by stars, adorned with auspicious signs. Like the sun with a thousand rays of light, shining brightly in the sky. Like the ocean, deep and immeasurable, possessing a multitude of precious jewels. Like a Chakravartin king surrounded by many attendants. Like the king of snow mountains, with the flowers of faculties, powers, and limbs of enlightenment blooming everywhere. Like the great iron fence mountain, unshaken by all the attacks of outsiders. Like a lotus, although dwelling in the water, unstained by all the worldly dharmas. Like Brahma in the assembly of Brahma. Like Indra with a thousand eyes, seated on a lion throne. Like a lion, fearless and unafraid, roaring the true lion's roar. I will not see all of this anymore." Having said these words, the venerable Rahula wept, his heart filled with sorrow, and remained silent. Then, the guide, the Tathagata, spoke these words to the venerable Rahula: Rahula, you go to the Venerable One. The Venerable One wishes to see you, Rahula, do not disobey my words and go. Do not weary the body of the Venerable One. Rahula, you must stay there. Why is that? Rahula, the Buddhas, the Venerable Ones, such is the nature of Dharma.

When the departed are pervaded with loving-kindness, whatever you contemplate, whatever you desire, they will certainly not completely pass beyond sorrow. At that time, they will certainly remain there. Rahula, the Tathagata wishes to see you, go and you must certainly stay there. Then, the venerable Rahula bowed his head at the feet of the Blessed One, the Tathagata, the leader. Just as, for example, a strong man extends his arm from a bent position, or bends his arm from an extended position, so too, the venerable Rahula, the Blessed One, the Tathagata, the Arhat, the Perfectly Enlightened One, disappeared from the Buddha-field of the leader, and went to where the Blessed One was, in the grove of Sala trees, between the twin Sala trees, near the city of Kusha, the giants. Having arrived, he bowed his head at the feet of the Blessed One, circumambulated him three times, weeping and lamenting. With tears flowing, he folded his palms and sat down on one side. Then, the Blessed One said to the venerable Rahula: Rahula, come here. Rahula, do not be unhappy, do not weep and lament, do not grieve. Rahula, you have done the work of a father for me, and I have done the work of a son for you. Rahula, in this way I have done the work of a father, and you have done the work of a son. We two have both done what needed to be done, and it is finished, so Rahula, do not be sad, do not lament, do not grieve. Rahula, we two have entered for the sake of making all beings fearless, and without hatred, without competition, without strife, without mutual harm, look. Now I am staying here for the sake of completely passing beyond sorrow, and henceforth I will not become anyone's father. Rahula, if you also completely pass beyond sorrow, henceforth you will not become anyone's son. Rahula, we two abide in harmlessness and without discord towards all beings, look. Then, the venerable Rahula said to the Blessed One: Blessed One, completely
