Chapter Four: The Chapter of Rāhula. Chapter Four: The Chapter of Rāhula. Then, the venerable Rāhula thought to himself: "I do not wish to witness the Blessed One passing into complete Nirvana. If I were to see the Blessed One passing into complete Nirvana, how could I be content? Where would there be contentment? Where would there be peace of mind? Where would there be joy? Where would there be delight? I must certainly go from here, beyond ten world realms, to the world realm of Light, to the presence of the Blessed One, the Tathagata, the Arhat, the Perfectly Enlightened Buddha named Difficult to Overcome." He thought in this way. Then, the venerable Rāhula, having become invisible from the grove of Sala trees where the giants of the city of Kusha were dwelling, went to the northeast direction, to where the Tathagata Difficult to Overcome was, and having arrived, he bowed his head at the feet of the Blessed One, the Arhat, the Perfectly Enlightened Buddha Difficult to Overcome, and sat down on one side. Having sat down on one side, the venerable Rāhula, suffering and unhappy, was addressed by the Tathagata, the Arhat, the Perfectly Enlightened Buddha Difficult to Overcome, who said: "Rāhula, do not grieve, do not lament. Why is that? Rāhula, all things that are pleasing and agreeable will change, separate, disperse, and be parted from. Rāhula, it is the nature of things that the Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, having accomplished the deeds of the Buddha, pass into complete Nirvana. Rāhula, the Blessed One Shakyamuni, the Tathagata, the Arhat, the Perfectly Enlightened Buddha, will lie down like a lion on his right side between the twin Sala trees in the grove of Sala trees where the giants of the city of Kusha are dwelling, and in the last watch of dawn, he will pass into Nirvana in the realm of Nirvana without remainder. Rāhula, go there, you must certainly be there, Rāhula, go! Do not regret it after the Blessed One has passed into complete Nirvana." Having spoken these words, the Tathagata, the Arhat, the Perfectly Enlightened

To the Buddha who was difficult to approach, the venerable Rāhula said this: "Venerable One, the sound of the Tathāgata, the Arhat, the Perfectly Awakened One, saying that he will pass into complete nirvāṇa in the last moment is unbearable to hear. What need is there to say about seeing the Venerable One passing into complete nirvāṇa with one's own eyes? Venerable One, therefore I do not wish to go there." Then, the venerable Rāhula, without listening to the teachings of the Venerable One, the Tathāgata who was difficult to approach, disappeared from that Buddha-field. In the tenth world in the upper direction, there dwells and lives a Tathāgata, an Arhat, a Perfectly Awakened One, named Leader. Then, the venerable Rāhula went to where the Tathāgata Leader was, and upon arriving, he bowed to the feet of the Tathāgata Leader, weeping with a tearful face, uttering lamentations, and sat down to one side. As he sat to one side, the Venerable One, the Tathāgata, the Arhat, the Perfectly Awakened One, the Leader, said this to the venerable Rāhula: "Rāhula, stop! Do not be displeased, do not grieve, do not lament! Rāhula, where is it that what is subject to birth will not be born, what is subject to aging will not age, what is subject to sickness will not be sick, what is subject to death will not die, and what is subject to decay will not decay? Rāhula, such a place is rare. Rāhula, all the Buddhas of the past and all the Śrāvakas of the Buddhas have also been pacified, separated, and passed into complete nirvāṇa. All the future Buddhas, Venerable Ones, and Śrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas will also pass into complete nirvāṇa. All those Tathāgatas, Śrāvakas, and Pratyekabuddhas who are now living will also pass into complete nirvāṇa. Rāhula, even if one lives for a kalpa or a hundred kalpas, one must certainly pass into complete nirvāṇa. Rāhula, for the Buddhas, the Venerable Ones, there is no other dharma-nature, no other dwelling place, except for the utterly peaceful. Rāhula, utterly

That which is called peace is exceedingly peaceful, exceedingly cool, exceedingly ultimate, exceedingly blissful, exceedingly accomplished and happy. For example, the realm of nirvana without a basis. Rahula, birth is suffering, aging is suffering, sickness is suffering, death is suffering, repeatedly being separated from loved ones is suffering, associating with the unloved is suffering, bearing the burden of the aggregates is suffering. Rahula, those who have completely passed beyond sorrow are happy. Rahula, may you also completely pass beyond sorrow. The Blessed One, the Tathagata, Shakyamuni, will also completely pass beyond sorrow. Where there is no birth, no aging, no sickness, no death, no separation from loved ones, no meeting with the unloved, no suffering and no discomfort, may you both desire to go there. Rahula, do not be displeased, do not grieve, do not lament. Rahula, remember the nature of dharma. Apart from wrongly clinging to what is not true, what birth is there here? What aging is there here? What death is there here? What transference is there here? What arising is there here? Rahula, childish ordinary people who are without learning, who have not seen the noble dharmas, who have not trained in the noble dharmas, who are not skilled in the noble dharmas, who do not abide in the noble dharmas, who are not tamed by the noble dharmas, who do not know the noble dharmas, therefore, due to perverted perceptions and perverted views, there will be birth, aging, sickness, death, transference, and arising, as well as wandering everywhere, circling, craving, decline, displeasure, sorrow, lamenting, and beating the breast. Rahula, in this discipline of the noble dharma, all formations are completely pacified, and there is nothing further to be done. Rahula, the shravaka of the teacher, the son of the Blessed One, you have done all that needs to be done. Rahula, the teacher, the Blessed One, has also done whatever the shravakas should do, and now there is nothing further to do. Rahula, now do not grieve, do not be displeased, do not lament, Ra
