To obtain the position of a king, this is the first great merit. To become the lord of the gods of the Four Great Kings' retinue, this is the second great merit. To become Indra, the lord of the gods, this is the third great merit. To become the son of the gods, Well-Fought, this is the fourth great merit. To completely become Tushita, this is the fifth great merit. To become Nimmanarati, this is the sixth great merit. To become the king of the gods, Paranirmitavasavarti, this is the seventh great merit. To become Brahma of the Great Brahma, this is the eighth great merit. Finally, the Thus-Gone One, the Arhat, the Perfectly Complete Buddha, having abandoned all non-virtuous dharmas, and being endowed with all virtuous dharmas, will also become, will obtain those eight great merits. Friends, whoever, when this extensive Dharma discourse of Play is being taught, lends an ear and listens, that one will obtain eight stainless minds. What are the eight? They are as follows: In order to destroy all hatred, one will obtain love; in order to abandon all harm, one will obtain compassion; in order to eliminate all displeasure, one will obtain joy; in order to abandon subsequent attachment and anger, one will obtain equanimity; in order to control all desire realms, one will obtain the four dhyanas; in order to control the mind, one will obtain the four formless absorptions; in order to go to and come from other Buddha-fields, one will obtain the five superknowledges; in order to obtain the samadhi of courageous conduct, one will obtain the complete destruction of all habitual connections. One will obtain those eight stainless minds. Friends, in whatever village, city, town, region, area of a region, promenade, or monastery this extensive Dharma discourse of Play is practiced, there, apart from the maturation of previous karma, eight fears will not arise. What are the eight?

Furthermore, for example, there will be no fear of being disturbed by a king, no fear of being disturbed by thieves, no fear of being disturbed by snakes, no fear of being disturbed by the solitude of famine, no fear of being disturbed by mutual fighting, arguing, debating, and fault-finding, no fear of being disturbed by gods, no fear of being disturbed by nagas, no fear of being disturbed by yakshas and others, and no fear of being disturbed by all harm. Friends, except for the ripening of past karma, these eight fears will not occur. Friends, in short, even if the Tathagata's lifespan were to last for an eon, and one were to constantly praise this Dharma category day and night, the praise of this Dharma category would still not be exhausted, and the Tathagata's fearlessness would also not be exhausted. Friends, just as the Tathagata's discipline, samadhi, wisdom, liberation, and the vision of the wisdom of liberation are immeasurable and endless, so too, friends, if beings, with the thought, "How will these sentient beings obtain such a vast Dharma?" hold, recite, read, write, or cause others to write this Dharma category, make it understood, and extensively and accurately teach it within the sangha, then their merit will also be endless. Then, the Bhagavan addressed the venerable Mahakashyapa, the venerable Ananda, and the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Maitreya, saying: "Friends, I entrust to your hands this unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment that I have accomplished in countless billions of kalpas. I entrust it with the supreme entrustment. You yourselves should also uphold this Dharma category and extensively and accurately teach it to others." Thus he spoke.

Having spoken thus, at that time, the Blessed One, in order to widely and completely entrust this category of Dharma, at that time also spoke these verses. The Buddha observes, whatever beings I see, those all become Arhats like Shariputra. If someone, for as many kalpas as there are grains of sand in the Ganges, makes offerings to them as well. If someone, in one day and one night, with great joy, to the Pratyekabuddhas, like garlands, and also makes offerings with other excellent things, then the merit made by this is especially superior. If all beings were to attain the Pratyekabuddha state, to those beings, if someone here diligently, for countless kalpas, makes offerings with food, drink, clothing, flowers, incense, and unguents. If someone prostrates once to a Tathagata, and with a joyful mind, says "I prostrate to the Arhat," then this merit is extremely superior. If all beings were to attain Buddhahood, to those beings, if someone makes offerings as before, with the flowers of gods and the excellent things of humans, in many ways for countless kalpas. If someone, when the excellent Dharma is being destroyed, gives up their own body and even their life, and for one day, upholds this sutra, this merit will become even more superior. Whoever wishes to make offerings to the guides, the Pratyekabuddhas, and the Shravakas, they should firmly generate the Bodhicitta and always uphold this sutra. Whatever is the manifestation of all the Tathagatas, this is the king of all good teachings. Wherever this Sutra Jewel abides, the Tathagata always abides in that house. Whoever gives this sutra to others, and even speaks one word, they, for countless kalpas, will not lose the letters and will not lose the meaning, and will obtain infinite eloquence and merit. Whoever hears this Dharma and diligently practices it, other than the guide among humans, there is no such being below.
