Chapter Sixteen: The Chapter of the Arrival of the Embodied Essence Chapter Sixteen: The Chapter of the Arrival of the Embodied Essence The Sutra of the Great Play, called "The Holy Great Play," is a Mahayana Sutra. Volume Eleven. Monks, in this way, the Bodhisattva, through the power of his blessing and intention, spoke words of solace to King Śuddhodana, the Śākya maiden Sā Tsomā, all the queens' retinues, and all the Śākya people, dispelling their sorrow. Monks, in this way, the Bodhisattva gave garments like those of a hunter-like son of the gods to him, and took from him ochre-colored garments. In order to conform to the world, to have compassion for sentient beings, and to fully ripen sentient beings, he himself went forth. Then, the Bodhisattva went to the place of the Brahmin who possessed wealth. He invited the Bodhisattva to stay and invited him for a meal. Then, the Bodhisattva went to the place of the Brahmin Lotus. He also invited the Bodhisattva to stay and invited him for a meal. Then, he went to the place of the Brahmin sage Namdru. He also invited the Bodhisattva as a guest in the same way. Similarly, the son of the one with the staff of taming, Light Virtue, also invited the Bodhisattva as a guest. Monks, in this way, the Bodhisattva gradually went to the great city of Vaiśālī. At that time, the son of Illusion-Knowledge, Long-Flyer, with a great assembly of Śrāvakas and three hundred disciples, settled and resided in the city of Vaiśālī. He taught the Dharma to his disciples in accordance with the ascetic practice of the sphere of nothingness. He saw the Bodhisattva coming from afar and was amazed, saying to his disciples, 'Hey, look at this person's form!' They said, 'Indeed, let us look at him; this is very wonderful!' Monks, then I went to the place of the son of Illusion-Knowledge, Long-Flyer, and said these words to the son of Illusion-Knowledge, Long-Flyer: 'Hey, son of Illusion-Knowledge, Long-Flyer, I practice pure conduct more purely than you.' He said, 'Hey, Gautama, what should a son of a faithful family practice to attain omniscience with little effort?'

One should practice such teachings that lead to transformation. Monks, I thought to myself: I have faith, I have diligence, I have mindfulness, I have samadhi, and I have wisdom. In order to attain and realize that Dharma, I should live alone, diligently, and in seclusion. Monks, then I lived alone, diligently, and in seclusion, and with little effort, I understood and realized that Dharma. Monks, then I went to where Long Flight, the son of the skilled artist, was, and said this: 'Long Flight, have you understood and realized this much of the Dharma?' He said: 'Yes, Gautama, that is so.' I said: 'I too have realized and understood that Dharma.' He said: 'Gautama, since that is so, whatever Dharma I know, you know; and whatever Dharma you know, I also know. Therefore, we two should teach this community of disciples.' Monks, then Long Flight, the son of the skilled artist, honored me with excellent offerings, and also allowed me to be in harmony with the disciples. Monks, I thought to myself: This Dharma of Long Flight is not a departure, nor is it necessarily a departure to the cessation of suffering by doing it correctly. I should seek and practice something more excellent than that. Monks, then I stayed in the city of Vaishali for as long as I was pleased, and wandering in the land of Magadha, I went to the great city of Rajagriha, the capital of Magadha, and went to the mountain king named Gray, and on the slope of that Gray mountain king, I lived alone, without a companion, without a friend, protected by countless billions of gods. Then in the morning, I put on my lower robe and Dharma robes, took my bowl, and entered the great city of Rajagriha through the Warm Water Gate, walking, returning, looking forward, looking to the left and right, contracting and extending gracefully, the sewn robe and the patched robe, holding the bowl and Dharma robes gracefully, with undisturbed senses, transformation.
