Chapter Ten: The Chapter on the Teaching of Letters Chapter Ten: The Chapter on the Teaching of Letters Monks, in this way, after that youth Yaza was born, hundreds of thousands of auspicious ceremonies were performed, and ten thousand boys and ten thousand girls surrounded him and led the way in front, sending him to the school of letters. Ten thousand chariots filled with food, drink, and flavors, and ten thousand chariots filled with gold, silver, and barley were brought and scattered in the streets, alleys, and market places of the great city of Kapilavastu. They were completely given away. At the same time, the sound of eight hundred trillion musical instruments was played, and a great rain of flowers also fell from the sky. From the top of pavilions, gatehouses, stables, windows, cool rooms, high buildings, and palaces, hundreds of thousands of girls adorned with all kinds of ornaments were gazing at the Bodhisattva and scattering flowers upon him. Eight thousand goddesses, magnificently adorned with various ornaments, held exquisite jewels, swept the road, and walked in front of the Bodhisattva. Gods, nagas, yakshas, gandharvas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, and mahoragas also revealed half of their bodies and scattered flowers and silk ribbons from the center of the sky. All the Shakyas also gathered before King Suddhodana and walked in front of the Bodhisattva. The Bodhisattva entered the school of letters in such a grand procession. As soon as the Bodhisattva entered the school of letters, the teacher of the children, named Sarvamitra, could not bear the Bodhisattva's splendor and majesty, and fell face down to the ground. When he fell, the son of the gods of Tushita, named Subahu, saw him and lifted him up with his right hand. After lifting him up, he remained in the center of the sky and spoke in verses to King Suddhodana and the great multitude: What treatises are there in this human world? Numbers, letters, arithmetic, and the streams of elements, and the immeasurable combinations of worldly crafts.

In countless eons past, this one has learned those. However, merely conforming to beings, causing many children to mature in the supreme vehicle, and for the sake of making countless other sentient beings rejoice in immortality, even though extremely skilled, he entered the writing school for the sake of learning. Knowing the four truths of the path that transcends the world, and also being skilled in how things arise dependent on causes, and also knowing how conditioned phenomena cease, are exhausted, and become cool, if he knows that, why would he not know just a treatise on writing? In the three realms, there is no teacher superior to this one. Among gods and humans, this one is the chief. The names of the letters that this one learned from whom in countless eons past, you will not even know. Whatever various mental states of beings arise, this one knows sentient beings in an instant, and if he is also skilled in the formless and invisible state, what need is there to mention letters that have form and are visible? Having spoken thus, the son of the gods scattered many divine flowers upon the Bodhisattva and then disappeared. Then, arranging the retinue of his mother and maids, King Śuddhodana and other Śākyas went out. Then, the Bodhisattva, holding a wooden writing board made of sandalwood snake-heart, painted with divine colors, bound with golden eyes, and adorned all around with precious jewels, spoke thus to the spiritual friends of all the teachers: O Abbot, what letter should I learn? The Brahmā script? The Kharoṣṭhī script? The lotus-heart script? The Aṅga script? The Maṅga script? The script of the land of Magadha? The auspicious script? The finger script? The Śakanī script? The Yavana script? The Bāgale script? The Paruṣa script? The Traveling script? The Kirāta script? The southern script? The violent script? The numerical script? The common style script? The conforming script? The Bruśa script? The Kāśa script? The Chinese script? The Puna script? The Huna script? The medium-sized script and the script for writing extensively? The royal script? The divine script? The nāga script? The yaksha
