For the sake of cushions and the diligent efforts of all individuals of the Bodhisattva Vehicle to arise, and to fully uphold the sacred Dharma, not to cut off the lineage of the Three Jewels, and to perfect the deeds of the Buddha, and also for the sake of universally showing, now please teach. After this request, the Blessed One, out of compassion for those sons of the gods and the world including the gods, remained silent and gave his consent. Then those sons of the gods also, knowing that the Blessed One's silence was consent, were satisfied, pleased, joyful, and exceedingly delighted, and joy and ease of mind arose. They bowed their heads at the feet of the Blessed One, circumambulated the Blessed One three times, and also scattered sandalwood powder, agarwood powder, and Mandarava flowers, and disappeared right there. Then the Blessed One, when that night dawned, went to the surrounding corridor of the bamboo grove garden, and having arrived there, the Blessed One, surrounded by the assembly of Bodhisattvas and with the monastic community of Shravakas watching in front, sat on the prepared seat. Having sat down, the Blessed One addressed the monks: "Monks, last night here with me, from the pure abode of the gods, a son of the gods named自在(藏文：དབང་ཕྱུག་，梵文天城体：ईश्वर，梵文罗马拟音：Īśvara，汉语字面意思：自在)，as well as Great自在(藏文：དབང་ཕྱུག་ཆེན་པོ，梵文天城体：महा ईश्वर，梵文罗马拟音：Mahā īśvara，汉语字面意思：大自在)，Joyful, Extremely Joyful, Sandalwood, Offered, Utterly Peaceful, Subdued Utterly Peaceful自在(藏文：དུལ་བ་རབ་ཞི་དབང་ཕྱུག་，梵文天城体：विनित परम शान्त ईश्वर，梵文罗马拟音：Vinita Parama Shānta Īśvara，汉语字面意思：调柔极寂静自在) and so forth, and other very many sons of the gods from the pure abodes, from the one named... to disappearing right there, spoke as before. Then those Bodhisattvas and those great Shravakas, with their palms joined at the Blessed One, requested the Blessed One thus: Blessed One, please teach well the category of the Dharma of vast play, that it may be beneficial to many beings, bring happiness to many beings, show compassion to the world, and for the benefit and happiness of the majority of beings, gods and humans, and the Bodhisattva Mahasattvas of the present and future." Out of compassion for those Bodhisattvas, great beings, and those great Shravakas, and the world including gods, humans, and asuras, (the Buddha) granted permission without speaking. To this, it is said: Monks, last night here, I dwelt in bliss with a good abode, I dwelt perfectly without afflictions, Before the Samadhi seat of one-pointed mind, A son of the gods, possessing great miraculous powers and excellent color, Spotless and radiant, having arrived, Illuminated this victorious grove with splendor, And joyfully appeared before me. Ishvara, the great Ishvara Chandana, And the joyful, greatly pacified mind, the offering maker, And the son of the extremely joyful, peaceful god, Those hundreds of thousands of gods, Having prostrated at my feet and circumambulated, Sat here before me. With ten fingers joined in reverence, They here to me Prayed: For the sake of benefiting all the world, Whatever the Buddhas have previously spoken, This deeply extensive sutra, this great subject matter, The Able One, having dispelled desire, today also Wishes to hold the assembly of Bodhisattvas, Taming the opponents and all the maras, And excellently speak this supreme Great Vehicle, Pray that the Able One will explain it well for this purpose.
