Twenty-first Chapter: The Chapter on Courage. Twenty-first Chapter: The Chapter on Courage. Then, the Blessed One, together with the Bodhisattvas and the great Shravakas, resided on Vulture Peak Mountain. Then, at dawn, the Blessed One arose from perfect absorption and began to teach the Dharma. Then, eighty-four thousand beings of the great city of Rajagriha, along with King Ajatashatru and his retinue, knowing that the Blessed One had returned, at dawn, carrying flowers, incense, garlands, and unguents, came from the great city of Rajagriha to Vulture Peak Mountain, and went to where the Blessed One was. Having arrived, they bowed their heads at the feet of the Blessed One and sat to one side. Having sat to one side, King Ajatashatru said to the Blessed One: "Blessed One, when I was in this hermitage, the young Fear-Giver came and said: 'Father, the Blessed One is at the abode of the Lord of Secrets, Vajrapani, in the palace of the Willow Grove, where umbrellas are hung around, and then returned.' Blessed One, I then thought: 'For what reason was the Blessed One invited to the abode of the Lord of Secrets, Vajrapani, in the palace of the Willow Grove?' It was to fully ripen sentient beings that he went to the palace of the Willow Grove. Like this, the sentient beings that the Tathagata has completely abandoned, there is nothing in the category of sentient beings. The great compassion of the Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, entering into sentient beings is truly wonderful! Blessed One, the Tathagata makes various determinations about the Dharma, the predictors predict, and the Lord of Secrets, Vajrapani, becomes joyful, this is truly wonderful!' Blessed One, how many Tathagatas, Arhats, Perfectly Awakened Ones must the Lord of Secrets, Vajrapani, have planted roots of virtue in to have such courage!" After saying this, the Blessed One said to King Ajatashatru:

Thus he spoke. Great king, sentient beings who have not generated roots of virtue find it difficult to have faith in this, but those who have generated roots of virtue will have faith. Great king, the worlds in the ten directions, as numerous as the sands of the Ganges, can be exhausted by counting, but the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, to whom the lord of secrets, Vajrapani, has made offerings and shown reverence, cannot be exhausted by counting. Because he has practiced celibacy among them, he possesses such confidence. Great king, you should also understand this in this way. Great king, in the past, in a time long ago, in immeasurable eons of immeasurable dharmas, vast and exceedingly vast, immeasurable, inconceivable, At that time, in that era, in the kalpa called "Not Inferior," in the world called "Completely Victorious," the Tathagata, Arhat, Samyaksambuddha, perfect in knowledge and conduct, Sugata, knower of the world, unsurpassed guide of beings, teacher of gods and humans, the Buddha Bhagavat named "Peaceful Conduct" appeared in the world. The Bhagavat Tathagata Peaceful Conduct said to the sons of good family: "You should also abandon your body and life and exert yourselves." Thus, he spoke only the words of a Bodhisattva. Great king, at that time, a Bodhisattva named Brave Strength was assembled in that assembly and sat there. He spoke to the Bhagavat as follows: "Bhagavat, you have said that Bodhisattvas should also abandon their body and life and exert themselves. As I understand the meaning of what the Bhagavat has said, Bhagavat, the Bodhisattva who thinks, 'I will quickly attain unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment,' I think is known as a lazy person. Why is that? Bhagavat,

The bodhisattvas who have initiated diligence will not develop a mind of complete weariness towards samsara. World Honored One, bodhisattvas regard samsara as beneficial for the sake of completely maturing sentient beings, not nirvana. World Honored One, bodhisattvas are diligent for the benefit of sentient beings. Why is that? World Honored One, for those bodhisattvas who are fond of diligence, samsara is the most joyful, not nirvana. Why is that? World Honored One, those bodhisattvas who are diligent for the benefit of sentient beings, the more they work for the benefit of sentient beings, the more joyful they become. World Honored One, if one completely enters nirvana, what can one do afterwards? World Honored One, therefore, bodhisattvas do not taste the pleasure of samsara, but rather make samsara the place of taming, not making nirvana the place of enjoyment. World Honored One, bodhisattvas, without tasting the pleasure of samsara, make samsara the place of enjoyment and are diligent for the benefit of sentient beings, will see the immeasurable Buddha World Honored One, hear the immeasurable Dharma, and completely mature immeasurable sentient beings. World Honored One, the bodhisattva who makes samsara the place of enjoyment follows the place of enjoyment of sentient beings. World Honored One, the bodhisattva who makes nirvana the place of enjoyment falls into abandonment. World Honored One, if the bodhisattva is afraid of the place of enjoyment of samsara, he will fall into a non-place of enjoyment, and afterwards will not work for the benefit of sentient beings, nor will he abide in the place of enjoyment of the Tathagata, nor will he become a close living for all sentient beings. What is that non-place of enjoyment? It is like the shravakas and pratyekabuddhas seek, and are negligent in completely maturing sentient beings.
