The Great Assembly Sutra. The Great Assembly Sutra. In Sanskrit: Mahasamaya Sutra. In Tibetan: The Great Assembly Sutra. Homage to the noble Three Jewels with reverence. Thus I have heard, at one time, the Blessed One was in the great grove of Nyagrodha in Kapilavastu of the Shakya country (present-day southern Nepal), together with a great Sangha of five hundred Bhikshus. All of them were Arhats. The gods of the ten world realms immediately gathered together, in order to behold the Blessed One and the Sangha of Bhikshus. Then, the four classes of gods of the Pure Abodes requested, saying: "Here also, the Blessed One is in the great grove of Nyagrodha in Kapilavastu of the Shakya country, together with a great Sangha of five hundred Bhikshus. All of them are Arhats. The gods of the ten world realms immediately gathered together, in order to behold the Sangha of Bhikshus of the Blessed One. Whoever does so, they go to where the Blessed One is, and having gone, they should each speak verses before the Blessed One." Then, those gods, just as quickly as a strong man bends his arm from being outstretched or stretches it from being bent, the gods of the Pure Abodes disappeared and appeared before the Blessed One. Then, those gods prostrated to the Blessed One and sat to one side. Having sat to one side, those gods again spoke these verses before the Blessed One: "In this great assembly grove, the assembly of gods has gathered. For the sake of this Dharma, we have come, to behold the invincible Sangha of Bhikshus." After that, other gods spoke these verses before the Blessed One: "The Sangha of Bhikshus has tamed minds, their own minds are upright. Just as a charioteer holds the reins upright, so do the wise guard their senses." After that, other gods spoke these verses before the Blessed One: "Having released the bonds of household life, the mind goes from the senses, going there pure and stainless, like a tamed elephant with eyes." Then, this verse was spoken to the Blessed One: Whoever goes to the Buddha for refuge will not fall into evil destinies. Having abandoned the human body, they will completely obtain a divine body. Then, the Blessed One summoned the monks, and immediately, monks, the gods of the ten world realms gathered to behold the Thus-gone One and the Sangha of monks. Those monks who had become past Arhats, perfectly enlightened Buddhas, were the same as the Blessed One, and the gods gathered in the same way. For example, I also say this: Monks, the names of the assemblies of gods should be spoken. Monks, the assembly of gods called "Those Who Make Utterly Clear," and monks, the assembly of gods called "Those Who Show the Assembly of Gods." Having heard that, hold it well in your mind, and I will speak. Thus, the monks individually inquired of the venerable Blessed One. The Blessed One spoke thus: Explain the verses separately. Wherever the earth is seen, whoever dwells in the caves of the mountains, there they abide in equanimity. Like a lion fearless on the earth, not even a hair stirs. The mind is pure and white, like water that is utterly clear. The five hundred have come to know well, and the many abodes of the Sakyas. Then the Teacher called the monks, the hearers who delight in the teachings. When the assemblies of gods have come, the monks should know. Without causing the body to suffer, by hearing the Buddha's teachings. They will become the light of wisdom. Non-humans will be seen. Some will see a hundred, and will see a thousand and seventy. Some will see a hundred and a thousand, and non-humans will be seen. Some will see the boundless, and will see that which fills all directions. They have realized, and with eyes they have discerned. Therefore, the Teacher calls, the hearers who delight in the teachings. When the assemblies of gods have come, the monks should know. What I am to speak, listen in order. Seven thousand yakshas.
