Thirty-first, The Chapter on Dharma Victory. Thirty-first, The Chapter on Dharma Victory. Having spoken thus, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Dharma Victory spoke thus to the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Sadāprarudita: "Son of good family, those Tathāgatas have not come from anywhere, nor have they gone anywhere, and they have not deviated from Suchness. Whatever is Suchness, that is the Tathāgata. Son of good family, there is no coming or going in the unborn; whatever is unborn, that is the Tathāgata. Son of good family, there is no knowledge of coming or going at the ultimate limit of reality; whatever is the ultimate limit of reality, that is the Tathāgata. Son of good family, there is no knowledge of coming or going in emptiness; whatever is emptiness, that is the Tathāgata. Son of good family, there is no knowledge of coming or going in reality; whatever is reality, that is the Tathāgata. Son of good family, there is no knowledge of coming or going in detachment from desire; whatever is detachment from desire, that is the Tathāgata. Son of good family, there is no knowledge of coming or going in cessation; whatever is cessation, that is the Tathāgata. Son of good family, there is no knowledge of coming or going in the realm of space; whatever is the realm of space, that is the Tathāgata. Son of good family, the Tathāgata is not other than these dharmas; son of good family, whatever is the Suchness of these dharmas, whatever is the Suchness of all dharmas, and whatever is the Suchness of the Tathāgata, these Suchnesses are one; son of good family, in Suchness, there is no duality. Son of good family, Suchness is one; thus, because it does not exist, it has transcended being counted as two or three. Son of good family, for example, when a man sees a mirage shimmering at the end of the summer months, at the time of the midday sun, he thinks, 'Here is water to drink,' and runs to where he sees the water. Son of good family, what do you think? From where does that water come from the great ocean of the east, or the south, or the west, or the north? Where does that water go?' Sadāprarudita said, 'Son of good family, there is no water in a mirage.'

How can there be knowledge of coming or going on the ground? Son of good family, that person is scorched by the sun, is of childish nature, is of scattered wisdom nature, seeing a mirage, he has the thought of water in a place where there is no water, but there is no water by nature there. Dharma Superior said: Son of good family, it is like that. It is like that. Likewise, son of good family, whoever is attached to the Tathagata appearing in form or sound, those think that the Tathagata is coming or going. Whoever thinks that the Tathagata is coming or going, all those are called childish in nature, scattered in wisdom in nature, just like that person who has the thought of water in a place where there is no water. Why is that? The Tathagata is not regarded as a form body, the Tathagata is the Dharma body. Son of good family, Dharma nature has no coming or going, son of good family, likewise, there is no coming or going for the Tathagatas. Son of good family, it is like this, for example, the group of elephants or the group of horses or the group of small armies transformed by the magician has no coming or going. Son of good family, likewise, there is also no coming or going for the Tathagata. Son of good family, it is like this, for example, a person sees one or two or three or four or five or six or seven or eight or nine or ten or twenty or thirty or forty or fifty or a hundred or more Tathagatas in a dream of sleep reversal, and upon awakening, he does not see even one Tathagata. Son of good family, what do you think? Where did those Tathagatas come from? Where did those Tathagatas go? Sadāprarudita said: Son of good family, in a dream, there is no knowledge that any Dharma is completely established. Dreams are false and not true. Dharma Superior said: Son of good family, it is like that. The Bhagavan said that all Dharmas are like dreams. Son of good family, whoever does not know that the Tathagata has shown all Dharmas to be like dreams as they really are, those are attached to the name body and the form body of the Tathagata.

Therefore, because they do not understand the nature of reality, they conceive that the Tathagata comes and goes. Those ordinary people who conceive that the Tathagata comes and goes will all sink into the six realms of samsara. All of them are far from the Perfection of Wisdom, and all of them are far from the Buddha's teachings. Noble son, if someone knows that all dharmas are like dreams, as the Tathagata has truly shown that all dharmas are like dreams, they will not conceive that any dharma comes, goes, arises, or ceases. Those who do not conceive that any dharma comes, goes, arises, or ceases, they fully understand the nature of the Tathagata. Those who fully understand the nature of the Tathagata do not conceive that the Tathagata comes or goes. Those who fully understand the nature of the Tathagata are approaching unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, and they are practicing the Perfection of Wisdom. The Shravakas of the Blessed One, their alms-gathering is meaningful for the inhabitants of the region, and they are the objects of giving in the world. Noble son, it is like this: for example, there are jewels in the great ocean, but they do not come from the east, nor from the south, nor from the west, nor from the north, nor from the intermediate directions, nor from above or below, nor from any of the ten directions. However, due to the roots of virtue of sentient beings, jewels arise from within the great ocean. These jewels do not arise without cause, but depend on causes, conditions, and a basis. The cessation of these jewels also does not move to any place in the ten directions, but if those conditions exist, the jewels will appear. If those conditions do not exist, the jewels will not appear. Noble son, similarly, the fully accomplished body of the Tathagata does not come from any place in the ten directions.
