Chapter Seventeen: The Aspects, Signs, and Characteristics of Non-Retrogression. Chapter Seventeen: The Aspects, Signs, and Characteristics of Non-Retrogression. Then, the venerable Subhuti said to the Blessed One: "Blessed One, what are the aspects, what are the signs, and what are the characteristics of a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who is non-retrogressing? Blessed One, how should I know a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva to be non-retrogressing?" The Blessed One replied: "Subhuti, whatever is the stage of an ordinary being, whatever is the stage of a Hearer, whatever is the stage of a Solitary Buddha, and whatever is the stage of a Buddha, this is called the stage of Suchness. In all of these, Suchness is non-dual and cannot be divided into two; it is without conceptualization and without manifold conceptualization. Entering into that Suchness and Dharmata, abiding in Suchness, not thinking about or discriminating Suchness. Entering thus, proceeding thus, having heard what Suchness is like, and having gone beyond even that, one does not hesitate, saying, 'It is not like this,' one does not have doubts, one does not waver, one is not confused, but one believes, 'This is Suchness, it is just as it is,' and one understands it. One does not speak rashly, but speaks words that have meaning, not words that are meaningless, and one does not look to what others have done or not done. Subhuti, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who possesses those aspects, those signs, and those characteristics should be regarded as non-retrogressing from Unsurpassed Perfect Enlightenment. Subhuti, furthermore, a non-retrogressing Bodhisattva-Mahasattva does not look to other ascetics and Brahmins, thinking, 'You should know, you are good friends, you should be looked up to, you have been seen.' He does not prostrate to other gods, he does not think of giving flowers, incense, perfumes, garlands, unguents, powders, clothes, umbrellas, banners, bells, lamps, or butter lamps to other gods, and he does not rely on other gods. Subhuti, a Bodhisattva who possesses those aspects, those signs, and those characteristics

The Bodhisattva Mahasattva is to be regarded as irreversible from unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment. Furthermore, Subhuti, those irreversible Bodhisattva Mahasattvas will not be born in the lower realms, nor will they take on the form of women. Furthermore, Subhuti, the irreversible Bodhisattva Mahasattva abides, having perfectly taken up the paths of the ten virtuous actions. They themselves abandon killing, and they also perfectly establish others in abandoning killing. They themselves abandon taking what is not given, and they also perfectly establish others in abandoning taking what is not given. They themselves abandon sexual misconduct, and they also perfectly establish others in abandoning sexual misconduct. They themselves abandon the place of heedlessness caused by grain alcohol and concocted alcohol, and they also perfectly establish others in abandoning the place of heedlessness caused by grain alcohol and concocted alcohol. They themselves abandon false speech, and they also perfectly establish others in abandoning false speech. They themselves abandon divisive speech, and they also perfectly establish others in abandoning divisive speech. They themselves abandon harsh speech, and they also perfectly establish others in abandoning harsh speech. They themselves abandon idle chatter, and they also perfectly establish others in abandoning idle chatter. They themselves abandon covetousness, and they also perfectly establish others in abandoning covetousness. They themselves abandon harmful intent, and they also perfectly establish others in abandoning harmful intent. They themselves abandon wrong view, and they also perfectly establish others in abandoning wrong view. Subhuti, thus, the irreversible Bodhisattva Mahasattva abides, having perfectly taken up the paths of the ten virtuous actions, and they also perfectly show, perfectly establish, perfectly praise, perfectly delight, and make firm others in the paths of the ten virtuous actions. That is, even in dreams, the paths of the ten non-virtuous actions, whether one or many, do not arise in any way, in any form, and the mind does not engage in them at all. Furthermore, Subhuti, the irreversible Bodhi-
