Furthermore, what causes the manifestation of omniscient nature, and the perfect attainment of unexcelled, perfect enlightenment, and the correct entry into complete Buddhahood, cannot be accomplished except by a Hearer or a Solitary Buddha. Subhuti, for example, if a person is born and lives to be one hundred and twenty years old, becoming old and decrepit, and their body is afflicted by some disease caused by wind, or caused by bile, or caused by phlegm, or caused by a combination of these, Subhuti, what do you think? Can that person rise from their bed without support? Subhuti replied, "Bhagavan, no." The Bhagavan said, "Subhuti, even if that person could rise from their bed, they would be afflicted by old age and disease, and would not have the strength to walk one or two steps. Even if that person could rise from their bed, they would not have the strength to walk. Subhuti, similarly, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who has faith, patience, desire, hope, diligence, carefulness, love, superior intention, generosity, respect, joy, delight, pleasure, and extreme joy in the perfect attainment of unexcelled, perfect enlightenment, and does not abandon it, but is not supported by the Perfection of Wisdom and is devoid of skillful means, then even if some have correctly entered the path to the perfect attainment of unexcelled, perfect enlightenment, Subhuti, such a Bodhisattva will be depleted and lost in the middle, and it should be known that they will abide in the Hearer's ground or the Solitary Buddha's ground. Why? Because they are not supported by the Perfection of Wisdom and are devoid of skillful means. Subhuti, for example, if a person is born and lives to be one hundred and twenty years old, becoming old and decrepit, and their body is afflicted by some disease caused by wind, or caused by bile, or caused by phlegm.

Or, afflicted by some disease arising from cold, or from transformation or aggregation, then from his left and right sides, two strong men support him well, help him up, hold him firmly, and say to him, 'Hey, young man, until you reach the place where you are going, we two will support you, so that you will not fall on the road, nor will there be fear of being struck.' If advised, 'Go where you want to go,' he will be able to rise from that bed. Subhuti, similarly, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, in order to attain unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, has faith, patience, desire, intention, diligence, caution, interest, afterthought, generosity, respect, joy, satisfaction, tranquility, extreme joy, and does not abandon effort. If he is completely grasped by the Perfection of Wisdom and is not separated from skillful means. Subhuti, that Bodhisattva-Mahasattva will not give up halfway, nor will he be destroyed, because that Bodhisattva- Mahasattva is to be known as capable of attaining the position of unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment from his position. The fourteenth chapter, called the Chapter of Similes, from the Holy Eight Thousand Verse Perfection of Wisdom, is complete. Fourteenth Chapter, Chapter of Similes.
