Fourteenth, the Chapter on Similes. Fourteenth, the Chapter on Similes. Then, the venerable Subhuti addressed the Blessed One as follows: "Blessed One, if a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, upon hearing, immediately rejoices in hearing the exposition of this profound Prajnaparamita, without fear, without trepidation, without shrinking, without bewilderment, without confusion, without doubt, without hesitation, and is exceedingly delighted with the Prajnaparamita, from where will that Blessed One pass away and where will he be born? "The Blessed One said: "Subhuti, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, upon hearing, immediately rejoices in hearing the exposition of this profound Prajnaparamita, without fear, without trepidation, without shrinking, without bewilderment, without confusion, without doubt, without hesitation, and will be exceedingly delighted with being equal to seeing, and will hold and cultivate this profound Prajnaparamita, not abandoning the mindfulness associated with the Prajnaparamita, and not letting the mind wander outward, he will generate the desire to hold, remember, read, fully understand, and thoroughly recite it, he will follow and go after it, and will not abandon the Dharma speaker. "Subhuti, just as there is a young calf that does not abandon its calf, so too, Subhuti, any Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who, having heard this profound Prajnaparamita, as long as this Prajnaparamita has not adhered to the body or been contained in a book, during that time, will not abandon the Dharma speaker, Subhuti, such a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, having died from impurity, is born among humans." Subhuti inquired: "Blessed One, are there Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas endowed with these qualities who have passed away from other Buddha-fields and been born here? "The Blessed One said: "Subhuti, there are also Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas who have attended, revered, inquired, questioned, and interrogated other Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, and have passed away from those other Buddha-fields and been born here, and they also possess these qualities."

It should be known that it possesses purity. Furthermore, Subhuti, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who has passed away from among the gods of Tushita and has been born here, should also be known to possess those qualities. Whoever has attended to the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva Maitreya and, starting from this Prajnaparamita, has fully inquired, fully questioned, and fully asked, should also be known to possess these qualities. Furthermore, Subhuti, if a Bodhisattva, having heard this profound Prajnaparamita, has not fully inquired, has not fully questioned, and has not fully asked in the past, even if born among humans, he will become dull, foolish, and discouraged in speaking about this profound Prajnaparamita. Subhuti, it should be known that that Bodhisattva has become of a nature that does not inquire in the past. Why is that? Because he has become dull, foolish, and discouraged in speaking about this profound Prajnaparamita. Furthermore, Subhuti, if a Bodhisattva has heard this profound Prajnaparamita for only one day, two days, three days, four days, or five days in the past, and after having attended to it with reverence, has fully inquired, fully questioned, and fully asked, that is only temporary faith, and it will be lost again and will be taken away by questioning. Why is that? Subhuti, it is like this: whoever has not fully inquired, has not fully and correctly questioned, has not fully and correctly asked, and has not followed in the past, sometimes follows with desire in order to listen to this profound Prajnaparamita, and sometimes does not desire to follow, therefore he becomes distracted and discouraged, his mind becomes arrogant, and he becomes like the burning of cotton. It should be known that this Bodhisattva has entered the Great Vehicle correctly, but has not yet attained longevity, and has come having newly entered the Great Vehicle. That Bodhisattva's faith

And that joy and that desire will completely disappear. For example, if one cannot uphold, follow, or rely on this profound Prajnaparamita, then he will hope to become a Hearer's ground or a Solitary Buddha's ground, or hope to become any one of these two grounds. Manjushri, for example, when a ship entering the great ocean sinks, those who do not grab hold of wood or planks, nor grab hold of a corpse, Manjushri, know that these people will not reach the other shore, but will die in the water. Manjushri, also, when a ship entering the great ocean sinks, those who grab hold of wood, planks, or a corpse, Manjushri, these people will not be drowned by the water, but will reach the other shore in comfort, and will remain on land without fatigue or exhaustion. Manjushri, similarly, if a Bodhisattva has only faith, only joy, only delight, only desire, but does not rely on Prajnaparamita as the path, then Manjushri, these people will be destroyed in the middle of the path, without obtaining omniscience, and will remain in the Hearer's ground or the Solitary Buddha's ground, it should be understood in this way. Manjushri, also, Bodhisattva Mahasattvas, if they have faith, patience, desire, hope, diligence, caution, devotion, higher aspiration, generosity, respect, joy, satisfaction, delight, great joy, and unabandoned effort for the unsurpassed perfect enlightenment, the actualization of enlightenment, the actualization of perfect enlightenment, if these people rely on Prajnaparamita, then, their faith, patience, desire, hope, diligence, caution, devotion, higher aspiration, generosity, respect, joy, satisfaction, delight, great joy, and unabandoned effort, will also, after obtaining Prajnaparamita, abide in omniscience.
