Chapter 9: The Chapter of Praise Chapter 9: The Chapter of Praise Then, the venerable Subhuti said to the Blessed One: "Blessed One, what is called 'Prajnaparamita' is just a name. And that name cannot be pointed out as 'this is it.' Only the object of speech is called a name. That Prajnaparamita is also non-existent and invisible. Just as the name is, so is the Prajnaparamita. How the Prajnaparamita is, so is the name. If these two dharmas are non-existent and invisible, then Blessed One, for what reason will the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva Maitreya, after attaining the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, become a Buddha and teach this Prajnaparamita in this very place with these very names, these very words, and these very letters?" After he said this, the Blessed One said to the venerable Subhuti: "Subhuti, it is like this: the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva Maitreya, when attaining perfect and complete enlightenment, will say that form is not permanent, nor is it impermanent; form is not bound, nor is it liberated, therefore it is beyond limits and completely pure. Similarly, for feeling, perception, formation, and consciousness, it is not permanent, nor is it impermanent; consciousness is not bound, nor is it liberated, therefore it is beyond limits and completely pure. Subhuti, for this reason, the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva Maitreya, after attaining the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, will become a Buddha and teach this Prajnaparamita in this very place with these very names, these very words, and these very letters." After he said this, the venerable Subhuti said to the Blessed One: "Blessed One, how wonderful! This Prajnaparamita is completely pure." The Blessed One said: "Subhuti, form is completely pure, therefore Prajnaparamita is completely pure. Subhuti, similarly, feeling, perception, formation,

And consciousness, with complete purity, makes the Perfection of Wisdom completely pure. Subhuti, form is without arising, without ceasing, without universal defilement, and without complete purification; with complete purity, it makes the Perfection of Wisdom completely pure. Subhuti, likewise, feeling, perception, mental formations, and consciousness are without arising, without ceasing, without universal defilement, and without complete purification; with complete purity, it makes the Perfection of Wisdom completely pure. Subhuti, space is completely pure, thus making the Perfection of Wisdom completely pure. Subhuti, form is without attachment and without grasping, thus making the Perfection of Wisdom completely pure. Subhuti, likewise, feeling, perception, mental formations, and consciousness are without attachment and without grasping, thus making the Perfection of Wisdom completely pure. Subhuti, space and stillness are unspeakable and inexpressible, and without an object of focus, thus making the Perfection of Wisdom completely pure. Subhuti, with all the dharmas of near attachment and non-attachment, with non-attachment, the Perfection of Wisdom is made completely pure. After this was said, the venerable Subhuti said to the Blessed One: Blessed One, those sons or daughters of good family who hear this Perfection of Wisdom will have gained a very good gain. What need is there to mention those who hold, recite, understand, diligently recite, explain, explain in detail, uphold the meaning, and chant? They will not have eye diseases, ear diseases, nose diseases, tongue diseases, or body diseases. They will not become foolish. They will not abandon fear and will not face death. Many hundreds of thousands of sons of gods will follow them. On the eighth, fourteenth, and fifteenth days, wherever the sons or daughters of good family who speak the Dharma explain the Perfection of Wisdom, there, merit will be very great.

will increase. After this request, the Blessed One said to the venerable Subhuti: It is so, Subhuti, it is so. Subhuti, whether a son of good family or a daughter of good family, hundreds of thousands of gods will follow after him (or her). Hundreds of thousands of gods will come there. That Dharma teacher, all those who wish to hear the Dharma being taught about this Perfection of Wisdom, will be protected, guarded, and concealed. Why is that? Subhuti, because in the Perfection of Wisdom, there is the unsurpassed jewel of the world, revered by gods, humans, and asuras. Subhuti, therefore, whether a son of good family or a daughter of good family, will increase much merit from that basis. Subhuti, however, there will be many obstacles to writing, holding, carrying, reading, understanding, diligently reciting, telling, explaining in detail, transmitting, and reciting this profound Perfection of Wisdom. Why is that? Subhuti, just like this, a great jewel has many enemies; the more precious it is, the stronger the enemies become. Subhuti, just like this, this great jewel of the Perfection of Wisdom is the unsurpassed jewel in the world, appearing for the benefit and happiness of the world, to make all dharmas unborn and unceasing, to make all defilements cease, abiding in an imperishable manner. Subhuti, the Perfection of Wisdom does not abide in any dharma, does not change any dharma, nor does it completely grasp any dharma. Why is that? Subhuti, just like this, all those dharmas are non-existent and invisible. Subhuti, because it is unborn, the Perfection of Wisdom is unpolluted. Subhuti, this which is called unpolluted is the Perfection of Wisdom. Subhuti, just like this, because form is unpolluted, the Perfection of Wisdom is unpolluted. Similarly, feeling, perception, formation, and consciousness are unpolluted, therefore, Subhuti, the Perfection of Wisdom
