I, also enshrine others even in books and make offerings. If a son or daughter of good family, striving for the benefit of others and desiring, gives, bestows, subdues, and completely donates to those who ask, then, Blessed One, which of the sons or daughters of good family, who possess the mind of giving and who do not possess the mind of giving, accumulates the most merit? After asking this, the Blessed One spoke thus to Indra, the lord of the gods: Kauśika. Therefore, I ask you here, declare as you are able. Kauśika, what do you think? A son or daughter of good family, who, after the Tathāgata has passed into nirvāṇa, honors and serves the relics of the Tathāgata, serves and holds them, honors, respects as a teacher, remembers, makes offerings, paints, and serves them. And another son or daughter of good family, who also honors, respects as a teacher, remembers, makes offerings, paints, and serves the relics of the Tathāgata, thinking that the offerings will increase greatly. And also, out of compassion for sentient beings, widely and truly teaches, gives, and universally bestows to others. Kauśika, which of these two sons or daughters of good family accumulates the most merit? Is it the one who also makes offerings and widely and truly teaches, gives, and universally bestows to others who accumulates the most merit? Or is it the one who only makes offerings to himself individually who accumulates more merit? Indra replied: Blessed One, the son or daughter of good family who also honors, respects as a teacher, remembers, makes offerings, paints, and serves the relics of the Tathāgata, thinking that the offerings will increase greatly, and who, out of compassion for sentient beings, also widely and truly teaches, gives, and universally bestows to others. Of these two, it is this son or daughter of good family who accumulates more merit.
