又怎么会有造作会堕入到那里的业呢？ 世尊说： 善现，你觉得怎么样？ 对于颠倒的执着，依靠什么道修习，既不会完全染污，也不会完全清净的道修习，你认为有吗？ 禀告说： 世尊，颠倒的执着根本没有，对于它，依靠什么道修习，既不会完全染污，也不会完全清净的道修习，又怎么会有呢？ 世尊说： 善现，你觉得怎么样？ 魔术师显现各种各样的幻术，显现大象群，或者马群，或者牛群，或者步兵群，或者车乘群，或者女人的形象，或者男人的形象，对于那些幻术群，造作了什么业，会使众生堕入地狱，或者堕入无想处、非想非非想处之间呢？ 禀告说： 世尊，不是这样的，世尊，对于那个幻术，从哪里安住，能够造作业的，哪怕是像毛发尖端那样微小的东西也没有，对于它，造作了什么业，会使众生堕入地狱，或者堕入无想处、非想非非想处之间呢？ 又怎么会有造作会堕入到那里的业呢？ 世尊说： 善现，你觉得怎么样？ 对于那个幻术，依靠什么道修习，既不会完全染污，也不会完全清净的道修习，你认为有吗？ 禀告说： 世尊，不是这样的，世尊，那个幻术本身也没有实体，对于它，依靠什么道修习，既不会完全染污，也不会完全清净的道修习，又怎么会有呢？ 世尊说： 善现，你觉得怎么样？ 如来的化身所化的化身，又显现其他的化身，对于那个化身，造作了什么业，会使众生堕入地狱，或者堕入无想

How could there be any action that would cause one to go there? The Blessed One said: Subhuti, what do you think? With regard to the reversed perception, relying on what path of cultivation, is there any path of cultivation that neither becomes completely defiled nor completely purified, do you think? He replied: Blessed One, reversed perception does not exist at all. With regard to it, relying on what path of cultivation, is there any path of cultivation that neither becomes completely defiled nor completely purified? How could there be? The Blessed One said: Subhuti, what do you think? If a magician manifests various kinds of illusions, manifesting a group of elephants, or a group of horses, or a group of cows, or a group of infantry, or a group of chariots, or the form of a woman, or the form of a man, with regard to those groups of illusions, what action, having been performed, would cause sentient beings to go to hell, or to go to the realm between the realm of non-perception and the realm of neither perception nor non-perception? He replied: Blessed One, it is not so. Blessed One, with regard to that illusion, from where does it abide, that there is even a thing as small as a hair's tip that could perform an action? With regard to it, what action, having been performed, would cause sentient beings to go to hell, or to go to the realm between the realm of non-perception and the realm of neither perception nor non-perception? How could there be any action that would cause one to go there? The Blessed One said: Subhuti, what do you think? With regard to that illusion, relying on what path of cultivation, is there any path of cultivation that neither becomes completely defiled nor completely purified, do you think? He replied: Blessed One, it is not so. Blessed One, that illusion itself has no substance. With regard to it, relying on what path of cultivation, is there any path of cultivation that neither becomes completely defiled nor completely purified? How could there be? The Blessed One said: Subhuti, what do you think? If the emanation of the Thus-Gone One emanates another emanation, what action, having been performed with regard to that emanation, would cause sentient beings to go to hell, or to the realm of non-perception?

Do you think there are some actions that cause beings to fall into hell, or to enter the realm of neither perception nor non-perception? Answer: World Honored One, it is not so. World Honored One, since the emanation itself does not have substance, then what actions could the emanation perform that would cause beings to fall into hell, or to enter the realm of neither perception nor non-perception? How could there be actions performed by an emanation? The Buddha said: Subhuti, what do you think? For an emanation, is there a path of cultivation based on which one would neither be defiled by afflictions nor be purified? Answer: World Honored One, there is not. The Buddha said: Subhuti, what do you think? For an emanation, is there something that would cause it to be defiled or purified? Answer: World Honored One, there is nothing. The Buddha said: Subhuti, just as there is nothing that would cause it to be defiled, and nothing that would cause it to be purified, there is neither defilement nor purification. Why? Because those beings who cling to the view of self and the view of what belongs to self are the ones who become defiled or purified. But those who see things as they truly are are neither defiled nor purified. Just as those who see things as they truly are are neither defiled nor purified, there is neither defilement nor purification. From the Eighty Thousand Verse Perfection of Wisdom Sutra, the chapter on No Defilement and No Purification, the eightieth.
