Chapter Eighty: The Chapter on the Absence of Universal Defilement and Purification Chapter Eighty: The Chapter on the Absence of Universal Defilement and Purification Then, the venerable Subhuti said to the Blessed One: "Blessed One, if all dharmas are of the nature of non-things, then they are not made by the Buddhas, nor are they done by the Pratyekabuddhas, nor by the Arhats, the Non-returners, the Once-returners, or the Stream-enterers. Furthermore, those Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas who practice for the sake of this Bodhi have not done them either. Blessed One, then why are these dharmas said to be beings in hell, these are the birthplaces of animals, these are the beings of the realm of Yama, these are gods, these are humans? This action causes beings to go to hell, this causes them to go to the birthplaces of animals, this causes them to go to the realm of Yama, this causes them to go to the gods, this causes them to go to humans, this causes them to go to the Brahma realms, this causes them to go to the gods up to the realm of neither perception nor non-perception. This action causes them to go to the Stream-enterers, this action causes them to go up to the Pratyekabuddhas, this action causes them to go to the Bodhisattvas, this action causes them to become the Tathagatas, the Arhats, the Perfectly Awakened Buddhas? Are such distinctions or arrangements made? Blessed One, in the absence of things, by what action does a sentient being go to hell, or to the birthplace of animals, or to the realm of Yama, or to humans or gods, or even to the realm of neither perception nor non-perception, or attain the fruit of Stream-entry, or the fruit of Once-returning, or the fruit of Non-returning, or Arhatship itself, or attain Self-awakening, or attain the Bodhisattva state, or practice the path of Bodhi, or attain omniscience, or having attained that, what action causes sentient beings to be completely liberated from Samsara? There is no such thing."

Having thus entreated, the Blessed One spoke to the venerable Subhuti, saying: Subhuti, it is so, it is so. It is as you say, it is so. Subhuti, if there is no thing, then there is no action, no deed, and no result. However, those childish ordinary beings who are not endowed with learning and are not skilled in the noble dharmas do not know that all dharmas are of the nature of no-thing. Because their minds are completely roused by perverted views, they manifestly perform various actions. By these actions, they manifestly accomplish such bodies, even going near to rebirth in the hells, or the realm of animals, or the world of Yama, or gods, or humans, or the realm of neither perception nor non-perception. If there is no thing, then there is no action, no deed, and no result. Why? Because that which is no-thing is itself the nature of no-thing. Subhuti, you also said this: If there is no thing, by what action can one attain the fruit of stream-entry, or even the fruit of arhatship, or solitary enlightenment, or a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practicing the knowledge of the aspects of the path, or even the attainment of the all-knowingness of a Tathagata, an Arhat, a perfectly complete Buddha? And having attained that, what action can cause all sentient beings to be completely liberated from samsara? Subhuti, what do you think? Is the path not no-thing? Is the fruit of stream-entry also not no-thing? Is the fruit of once-return also not no-thing? Is the fruit of non-return also not no-thing? Is arhatship also not no-thing? Is solitary enlightenment also not no-thing? Is the knowledge of the aspects of the path also not no-thing? And even all the way to all-knowingness, is that not no-thing? He replied: Blessed One, the path is indeed no-thing. And even all the way to all-knowingness, that is also no-thing. The Buddha said: Subhuti, if that is so,

Do you think that a dharma of non-entity can obtain a dharma of non-entity? He replied: Blessed One, it is not so. The Blessed One said: Subhuti, therefore, whatever is a non-entity, and whatever is the path, those two are neither concordant nor discordant. Without form, invisible, unimpeded, thus, the absence of characteristics is the one characteristic. Therefore, Subhuti, when a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, with skillful means, he causes sentient beings with four inversions to be attached to the aggregates, to perceive permanence in impermanence, to perceive happiness in suffering, to perceive self in non-self, and to perceive purity in impurity, and he liberates those who are attached to entities from entities. After saying this, the venerable Subhuti said to the Blessed One: Blessed One, if ordinary beings abide in something and are attached to "entities," will an entity arise, or will the arising thing be truly and non-invertedly real? If not, then by what karma will they not be completely liberated from the cycle of the five realms, and how will they become attached to such karma? The Blessed One said: Subhuti, apart from inversion, there is not even a part as small as the tip of a hair of the entity that ordinary beings abide in and become attached to. Therefore, Subhuti, by all means, this meaning must be widely and completely fulfilled, and for the wise to understand, I will explain it to you with an analogy. Subhuti, what do you think? When one dreams a dream, abiding in what place, does one enjoy pleasure with the five qualities of desire? Do you think there is such a thing as dreaming a dream? He replied: Blessed One, since the dream itself does not exist, how can there be an entity that abides in something and enjoys pleasure with the five qualities of desire? The Blessed One said: Subhuti, what do you think? Those conditioned dharmas that are not like dreams, or unconditioned dharmas, or contaminated ones,
