The Seventh Chapter, the Nineteenth, Chapter on Showing the Nature of Non-Things. The Seventh Chapter, the Nineteenth, Chapter on Showing the Nature of Non-Things. Then, the venerable Subhuti said to the Blessed One: Blessed One, if these dharmas are the dharmas of a Bodhisattva, Blessed One, then what are the dharmas of a Buddha? The Blessed One said: Subhuti, what you say, 'if these dharmas are the dharmas of a Bodhisattva, then what are the dharmas of a Buddha?' Subhuti, those dharmas of a Bodhisattva are also the dharmas of a Buddha, for when those dharmas are fully awakened in all aspects, and when all-knowingness is attained, then all their habits and connections are abandoned. A Bodhisattva Mahasattva causes them to be fully awakened, but the Tathagata Arhat Samyaksambuddha fully awakens all dharmas with the wisdom of a single moment. Subhuti, that is the difference between a Bodhisattva Mahasattva and a Tathagata Arhat Samyaksambuddha. Subhuti, for example, an enterer is different, and one who abides in the fruit is different, but both of them do not become non-excellent persons. Subhuti, similarly, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva abides on the uninterrupted path, while the Tathagata Arhat Samyaksambuddha has attained unobstructed wisdom in all dharmas. Subhuti, that is the difference between a Bodhisattva Mahasattva and a Tathagata Arhat Samyaksambuddha. After he said that, the venerable Subhuti said to the Blessed One: Blessed One, if all dharmas are empty of their own nature, then for dharmas that are empty of their own nature, this is the sentient hell, this is the place of animals, this is the world of Yama, this is a god, this is a human.

This is the place of lineage. This is the eighth. This is the stream-enterer. This is the once-returner. This is the non-returner. This is the Arhat. This is the Pratyekabuddha. This is the Bodhisattva. This is the Tathagata, the Arhat, the perfectly complete Buddha. How can the distinctions of these, and the making of various distinctions, be discerned? World-Honored One, just as those individuals are unattainable, so too is karma unattainable. Just as karma is unattainable, so too is its maturation unattainable. Having thus requested, the World-Honored One said to the Venerable Subhuti: Subhuti, it is so, it is so, as you have said. In all dharmas that are empty of inherent nature, karma and the maturation of karma are also unattainable. Those who do not know that all dharmas are empty of inherent nature, they engage in misconduct, or good conduct, or actions with outflows, or actions without outflows. By the karma of misconduct, they fall into the three lower realms. By the karma of good conduct, they are born among gods and humans. By faultless virtuous actions, they are born in the form realm and the formless realm. Thus, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva, practicing the perfection of generosity, practices among the eighteen unshared qualities of the Buddha, and by faultless conduct, generates those qualities of the Bodhisattva. Having generated them, they also enter into the diamond-like samadhi, endowed with the wheel of the limbs of enlightenment, and realize the unexcelled, perfectly complete enlightenment. Having realized Buddhahood, they also work for the benefit of sentient beings. Doing benefit is not in vain, and because it is not in vain, all do not take birth in the cycle of the five destinies. Having thus spoken, the Venerable Subhuti said to the World-Honored One: World-Honored One, the unexcelled that the World-Honored One speaks of

Having manifestly awakened into perfect and complete enlightenment, do you perceive the cycle of the five destinies? The Blessed One said: Subhuti, it is not so. He asked: Blessed One, does the Thus-Gone One perceive black dharmas, or white dharmas, or black and white dharmas, or those that are neither white nor black? The Blessed One said: Subhuti, it is not so. He asked: Blessed One, if you do not perceive them, then how do you establish beings in hell, in the realm of animals, and in the world of Yama? How do you establish them among gods and humans? How do you establish them as stream-enterers? How do you establish them as once-returners, non-returners, arhats, and solitary buddhas? How do you establish them as bodhisattvas? How do you establish the Thus-Gone One, the Arhat, the Perfectly and Completely Awakened One? The Blessed One said: Subhuti, do these beings know that dharmas are empty of their own characteristics? He asked: Blessed One, it is not so. The Blessed One said: Subhuti, if these beings knew that all dharmas are empty of their own characteristics, then bodhisattvas, great beings, would not engage in unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. And if they did not engage in unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, then beings would not be liberated from the three bad destinies and the cycle of the five destinies. Subhuti, these beings do not know that all dharmas are empty of their own characteristics, and because they do not know, they have not been liberated from the three bad destinies and the cycle of the five destinies. Therefore, bodhisattvas, great beings, having heard from those Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, that all dharmas are empty of their own characteristics, engage in unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment for the benefit of beings. These dharmas do not exist as ordinary people perceive them. These beings themselves analyze and fixate on dharmas that are neither existent nor nonexistent, and they perceive non-beings as beings, and they perceive the formless as form.
