Chapter Fifty-eight: Examples Illustrating Non-Discrimination Chapter Fifty-eight: Examples Illustrating Non-Discrimination Then, the Lord of the Gods, Indra, thought to himself: "Even if a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices generosity, moral discipline, patience, diligence, meditation, and wisdom, and similarly applies them up to the eighteen unshared qualities of the Buddha, he will still subdue all sentient beings. What need is there to mention one who has manifestly and completely awakened to unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment? If sentient beings who direct their minds towards omniscience have well-obtained what is to be obtained and live well, what need is there to mention those who have generated the mind for unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment? Those sentient beings who have generated the mind for unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment are to be desired. Those sentient beings who have generated the mind for unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment are also to be desired." Thinking thus, the Lord of the Gods, Indra, then took Mandarava flowers and went to where the Blessed One was. He scattered those Mandarava flowers upon the Tathagata, the Arhat, the perfectly and completely awakened Buddha. He scattered them completely. He scattered them exceedingly completely. Having scattered, scattered completely, and scattered exceedingly completely, he spoke these words: "By this root of virtue, may those individuals of the Bodhisattva Vehicle who focus on unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment completely perfect the qualities of the Buddha. May the qualities of omniscience also be completely perfected. May these self-arisen qualities themselves also be completely perfected. May these undefiled qualities also be completely perfected. Blessed One, I am an individual of the Bodhisattva Vehicle, one who is focused on unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment.

have also truly entered. I have never had even a single thought of turning back from the unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment for those who have attained it. World-Honored One, I have never had even a single thought of turning back from enlightenment for those Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas who turn back from enlightenment and become Shravakas or Pratyekabuddhas. Furthermore, for the sake of the world including gods, humans, and asuras, and for the Bodhisattvas who seek healing and happiness, seeing these sufferings of wandering in samsara, I generate such thoughts: How shall I liberate those sentient beings who have not yet been liberated by me? How shall I free those sentient beings who have not yet been freed by me? How shall I comfort those sentient beings who have not yet been comforted by me? How shall I lead those sentient beings who have not yet entered nirvana to enter nirvana after I have passed away? I will generate the desire for unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment, and I will also make vast aspirations for unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment. World-Honored One, whether it is a son or daughter of good family, if they rejoice in the mind generation of the newly entered Mahayana Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas, rejoice in the mind generation of the long-practicing Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas, rejoice in the mind generation of the non-retrogressing Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas, rejoice in the mind generation of the one-birth-bound Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas, how much merit will they generate? After this question, the World-Honored One said to Indra, the lord of the gods: Kauśika. The world of the four great continents may be measurable by weighing, but the measure of the merit of the mind generation arising from rejoicing is not so. Kauśika.

The world, it may be possible to measure its size with a scale, but the measure of merit of those who generate the mind of enlightenment from rejoicing is not like that. Kausika. The great oceans of the three-thousand great-thousand world systems, it may be possible to measure the drops of water one by one with the tip of a hair split into a hundred parts, but the measure of merit of those who generate the mind of enlightenment from rejoicing is not like that. After he spoke thus, the lord of the gods, Indra, said this to the Blessed One: Blessed One, those beings who do not rejoice in those who generate the mind of enlightenment are blessed by the devil. Blessed One, those beings who do not rejoice in those who generate the mind of enlightenment are on the side of the devil. Blessed One, those beings who do not rejoice in those who generate the mind of enlightenment have died and transmigrated from the abode of the devil. Why is that? Blessed One, those beings who rejoice and strive for those who generate the mind of enlightenment, and who completely dedicate it to the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, are for the sake of destroying the abode of the devil. Blessed One, one should rejoice in those who generate the mind of enlightenment, those who will generate the mind of enlightenment for the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. Those who have not abandoned the Buddha, have not abandoned the Dharma, and have not abandoned the Sangha should also rejoice in these who generate the mind of enlightenment. After they have rejoiced, they will in no way have a dualistic perception, and they will not have a non-dualistic perception, and in this way they will completely dedicate themselves to the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. The Blessed One said: Kausika, it is so, it is so. Just as you have said, Kausika, those who rejoice in those who generate the mind of enlightenment will quickly become Tathagatas, Arhats.
