Chapter Twenty-Three, called Difficult to Comprehend. Chapter Twenty-Three, called Difficult to Comprehend. Then, those gods thought to themselves: How should we desire to listen to the Dharma from the Venerable Subhuti? Then, the Venerable Subhuti, knowing with his mind the thoughts of those gods, said to those gods: Gods, listening to the Dharma from me should be regarded as like a person of illusion. Listening to the Dharma from me should be regarded as like an illusion, for they have not heard anything at all, nor is there anyone who comprehends, nor is there anyone who manifests. Then, those gods said to the Venerable Subhuti: Venerable Subhuti, are sentient beings also like illusions, and are those who listen to the Dharma also like illusions? Are sentient beings also like illusions, and are those who listen to the Dharma also like illusions? Subhuti said: Gods, it is so, it is so. It is so, it is so, sentient beings are also like illusions, and those who listen to the Dharma are also like illusions. Sentient beings are also like illusions, and those who listen to the Dharma are also like illusions. Gods, sentient beings are like dreams and like illusions. Gods, form is also like a dream and like an illusion. Gods, feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness are also like dreams and like illusions. Gods, the eye is also like a dream and like an illusion. Likewise, the ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind are also like dreams and like illusions. Gods, form is also like a dream and like an illusion. Sound, smell, taste, touch, and dharmas are also like dreams and like illusions. The feeling of youth is also like a dream, like an illusion. The perfection of generosity is also like a dream, like an illusion. The perfection of morality, the perfection of patience, the perfection of diligence, the perfection of meditation, and the perfection of wisdom are also like a dream, like an illusion. The right abandonments, the miraculous feet, the faculties, the powers, the limbs of enlightenment, the eightfold noble path, the ten powers, the fearlessnesses, the individual correct knowledges, and the unmixed Buddha dharmas are also like a dream, like an illusion. The fruit of stream-entry is also like a dream, like an illusion. Stream-entry is also like a dream, like an illusion. The fruit of once-returner, once-returner, the fruit of non-returner, non-returner, Arhatship, and Arhat are also like a dream, like an illusion. Solitary enlightenment is also like a dream, like an illusion. Solitary Buddha is also like a dream, like an illusion. Unsurpassed perfect complete enlightenment is also like a dream, like an illusion. Buddhahood itself is also like a dream, like an illusion. Then those gods said to the venerable Subhuti, "Venerable Subhuti, if Buddhahood itself is like a dream, like an illusion, then do you say that Nirvana is also like a dream, like an illusion?" Subhuti said, "Gods, I say that Nirvana is also like a dream, like an illusion. Gods, if there is any dharma that is even more excellent than Nirvana, I would also say that it is like a dream, like an illusion."

For what reason is that? Sons of the gods, like this, whatever is a dream, whatever is an illusion, whatever is nirvana, those are non-dual and without distinction. Then, the venerable Shariputra and the venerable great Maudgalyayana, the venerable Mahakashyapa, the venerable great Katyayanaputra, the venerable Maitreya's son Purna, the venerable great Kashyapa, and thousands of Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas said this to the venerable Subhuti: Venerable Subhuti, this Prajnaparamita is so profound, so difficult to see, so difficult to realize, so peaceful, so excellent, so subtle, so non-other, so beyond the realm of thought, so skillful, so exceedingly superior, so skillful and to be known by the wise, who will take this up? After saying that, the venerable Subhuti said this to those great Shravakas and those Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas: Venerable ones, non-retrogressing Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas will take up this Prajnaparamita, it is so profound, so difficult to see, so difficult to realize, so peaceful, so excellent, so subtle, so non-other, so beyond the realm of thought, so skillful, so exceedingly superior, so skillful and to be known by the wise. A person who has seen the truth, or an Arhat who has exhausted the outflows, or one who has perfected cultivation, or one who has done surpassing deeds for the victors of the past, or one who has generated roots of virtue from countless billions of Buddhas, or a son of good family or daughter of good family who is completely embraced by a spiritual friend, will also take up this Prajnaparamita, it is so profound, so difficult to see, so difficult to realize, so peaceful, so excellent, so subtle, so non-other, so beyond the realm of thought, so skillful, so exceedingly superior, so skillful and to be known by the wise.
