Chapter Sixty-Eight Chapter Sixty-Eight Then, the venerable Subhuti said to the Blessed One: "Blessed One, if those dharmas are the dharmas of a Bodhisattva, then what are the dharmas of a Buddha?" The Blessed One said: "Subhuti, what you say, 'If those dharmas are the dharmas of a Bodhisattva, then what are the dharmas of a Buddha?' is this: Subhuti, the dharmas of a Buddha are also those very dharmas, but they are merely the complete and perfect enlightenment in all aspects, having obtained that omniscience and completely abandoned all the connections of habitual tendencies. Therefore, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva realizes complete and perfect enlightenment. The Tathagata Arhat Samyaksambuddha realizes complete and perfect Buddhahood with the wisdom that possesses all dharmas in a single instant, and therefore goes into the count of being called a Tathagata. There is that difference between a Bodhisattva Mahasattva and a Tathagata Arhat Samyaksambuddha. Subhuti, just as, for example, one who has entered [the stream] is different, and one who abides in the fruit is also different, but it should not be said that both of them are not noble individuals. Subhuti, in the same way, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva is one who has entered the path of non-interruption, and a Tathagata Arhat Samyaksambuddha is one who has attained unobstructed wisdom regarding all dharmas. Subhuti, that is the difference between a Bodhisattva Mahasattva and a Tathagata Arhat Samyaksambuddha. Subhuti asked: "Blessed One, if all dharmas are empty of their own nature, then in those dharmas that are empty of their own nature, this is a hell being, this is a place of animal birth, this is the world of Yama, this is a god, this is a human, this is a lineage, this is the eighth, this is a stream-enterer, this is a once-returner, this is a non-returner, this is an Arhat, this is a Pratyekabuddha, this is a Bodhisattva, this is a Tathagata Arhat Samyaksambuddha."

How can those who are called Buddhas be distinguished and differentiated? Blessed One, just as those individuals are not found, so too is karma not found. Just as karma is not found, so too is the ripening of karma not found. The Blessed One said: Subhuti, it is so, it is so. It is just as you have said. In the emptiness of all dharmas by their own nature, karma and the ripening of karma are not found. Subhuti, those who do not understand all dharmas as empty of their own nature in that way, they engage in evil conduct, or good conduct, or unwavering karma. Those who engage in evil conduct fall into the three lower realms. Those who engage in good conduct are born as gods and humans. Those who engage in unwavering karma are born in the form realm or the formless realm. Therein, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva engages in the perfection of generosity. He engages in the perfection of morality, the perfection of patience, the perfection of diligence, the perfection of meditation, and the perfection of wisdom. He engages in inner emptiness. He engages in the emptiness of the nature of non-things up to. He engages in the mindfulnesses. He engages in the right abandonments, the feet of miraculous power, the faculties, the powers, the limbs of enlightenment, and the eightfold noble path. He engages in the noble truths, meditation, the immeasurables, the formless absorptions, the liberations, the gradual abiding absorptions, and the doors of liberation: emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness. He engages in the superknowledges, the samadhis, and the doors of dharani. He engages in the ten powers of the Tathagata, the four fearlessnesses, the four analytical knowledges, great compassion, and the eighteen unshared qualities of the Buddha. Having generated the path to enlightenment through unwavering conduct, he abides in the vajra-like samadhi endowed with the wheel of the limbs of enlightenment, unsurpassed.

Also, he perfectly and completely awakens to unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. Having perfectly and completely awakened, he acts for the sake of sentient beings. Having acted, he acts in such a way that he will never regret it later, and that he will not fall into the cycle of the five lineages. The questioner said: Blessed One, what is the reason? Blessed One, having perfectly and completely awakened to unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, do you see the cycle of the five lineages? The Blessed One replied: Subhuti, no. The questioner said: Blessed One, what is the reason? Does the Tathagata see black dharma? White dharma? Is it black? Is it white? Does he see neither black nor white? The Blessed One replied: No. The questioner said: Blessed One, if that is not seen, how do you establish sentient beings in hell, or in the realm of animals, or in the world of Yama? How do you establish them in the realm of gods and humans? How do you establish stream-enterers, once-returners, non-returners, arhats, and solitary buddhas? How do you establish bodhisattvas and tathagatas, arhats, perfectly and completely awakened ones? The Blessed One said: Subhuti, what do you think? Do these sentient beings know that all dharmas are empty of their own nature? The questioner replied: No, Blessed One. The Blessed One said: Subhuti, if those sentient beings knew that all dharmas are empty of their own nature, then bodhisattvas, great beings, would not enter into unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. If they did not enter into unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, then sentient beings would not be liberated from the three lower realms and the cycles of samsara. Subhuti, those sentient beings do not know that all dharmas are empty of their own nature, and because they do not know, they are not completely liberated from the cycle of the five lineages. Therefore, bodhisattvas, great beings, having heard from those Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, that all dharmas are empty of their own nature, enter into unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment for the sake of sentient beings. These dharmas do not exist in the way that ordinary people cling to them. They
