said, 'Householder, please offer.' At the time of that offering festival, monks, nuns, laymen, laywomen, and many others who wished to see it came from various places. Because many offerings were made to him, the monks did not know who should be honored. The Blessed One said, 'Monks should be honored.' Some elder monks took it and were displeased. The Blessed One said, 'The resident and the young and old should be honored.' Monks, elders, and elders should protect. The offerings, flowers, clothes, etc., were placed on the cart, and some took the fallen things without permission, feeling dissatisfied. The householder Anathapindika asked, 'If the Blessed One allows, I can make a container for garlands on the cart.' The Blessed One said, 'Householder, please do so.' The monks did not stop the music, and the people did not disperse, but hid their external ornaments. Brahmins and faithful householders, and those who did not have faith like us, also had such thoughts: 'Alas! Why don't you stop the music? If many people disperse and take off their external ornaments, what harm would there be?' After the monks reported what had happened to the Blessed One, the Blessed One said, 'Monks, the ridicule of Brahmins and householders is justified. Therefore, before the music stops and many people disperse, monks should not flaunt their external ornaments. If they flaunt, they will become fallen.' This is the third verse of the fifth chapter of the Discourse on Matters. In short: gathering and festivals, and the last season of spring and washing the face, after five and six years, is the last great offering festival. The Buddha, the Blessed One, was staying in the Jeta Grove of Anathapindika's Garden in Shravasti. The householder Anathapindika invited monks and nuns residing in various places.
