Explaining the fourth pārājika. Explaining the fourth pārājika. The Buddha, the Bhagavan, was in Vaiśālī, residing in the multi-storied mansion near the Monkey Pond. At that time, five hundred fishermen, for the sake of their livelihood, relied upon and resided by the delightful river. They had two women named "Behavior Woman" and "Great Behavior." Sometimes they would let "Behavior Woman" enter, and sometimes they would let "Great Behavior" enter. When there were no fish to buy, they would let "Behavior Woman" enter; when there were fish to buy, they would let "Great Behavior" enter. At another time, when a festival occurred in Vaiśālī, they let both women enter. Two hundred and fifty let "Behavior Woman" enter, and two hundred and fifty let "Great Behavior" enter. Those who let "Behavior Woman" enter killed many things like fish, turtles, frogs, baby crocodiles, fish-dogs, etc., piling them up in large heaps like sesame, rice, large soybeans, Chinese fir, and Chinese beans. Those who let "Great Behavior" enter, having entered the delightful river from the great ocean, seized a large crocodile fish, huge in size, that was sleeping, and they began to drag it. As they dragged it, it woke up and entered the river, carrying those two hundred and fifty fishermen and "Great Behavior Woman." Those fishermen said to the other two hundred and fifty fishermen, "Friends, the crocodile is carrying 'Great Behavior Woman' and us away!" When they heard this, the other two hundred and fifty fishermen also came and gathered there, and they too were carried away. Then, sitting on high ground, they shouted, and then cowherds, cattle herders, etc., came and pulled it out with great effort, that crocodile fish resembling a piled-up mountain, with eighteen heads and thirty-six eyes. When a great crowd of people came and gathered, the six teachers, claiming to be teachers but not teachers, claiming to be all-knowing but not.

Is established in the wealth and power of the noble ones. Who abides in the fruit of humans. Who is tamed by the Buddha. Who is tamed by the Hearers. Who is tamed by the Buddha and the Hearers. Who engages in desire. Who engages in hatred. Who engages in delusion. Who engages in desire, hatred, and delusion. Who is harmed by all faults. Who inclines towards the evil realms. Who falls into the evil realms. Who has fallen into the evil realms. I shall raise whoever from the evil realms and firmly establish them in the heavens, liberation, and fruition. From whose hands shall one be drawn from sinking in the mire of evil conduct? In the world adorned by the arising of the Buddhas, it is known and seen how one should make it fruitful. Again it is said: The ocean is the abode of aquatic creatures, it may be possible to pass beyond time, but the Buddha, loving towards those to be tamed, will not pass beyond time. Just as a mother thinks of and protects the life of her only beloved child, so too the Thus-Gone One thinks of beings to be tamed and protects their lives. The compassion that the all-knowing one possesses in his lineage, like a cow that does not abandon the calf to be tamed, loves those who are ruined by existence and evil destinies, like a cow that loves its lost beloved calf. Then, the Bhagavan, with his eye of wisdom and vision without obscuration, looked with the eye of a Buddha. Having looked everywhere, he thought: Aquatic creatures of the fish species incline towards the evil realms, fall into the evil realms, have fallen into the evil realms. Although they have done extra deeds for the Buddhas of the past, now they are separated from the arising of the Buddhas, and for many thousands of years, they have been experiencing suffering in the hells of sentient beings. Relying on this aquatic fish species, I shall draw forth a great assembly of those to be tamed. I shall also make manifest to sentient beings the doing of karma as their own. Therefore, he thought that he should go to the shore of the delightful lotus pond. The Buddhas, the Bhagavat, are compassionate towards beings to be tamed by nature, therefore, they go to the hells of sentient beings from time to time, wander in the animal realm, wander in the realm of the hungry ghosts, wander in the realm of the gods, and wander in the world.
