I wish to go. Ananda said: Let's go together. He said: I wish to go with the Blessed One. Ananda rebuked him, saying: You wicked one, do you think I gave you the robe because of your good qualities? If I gave it to you because you were going with me, then if you don't go with me, I won't give you the robe. The venerable one thought: It is not right for me to have my Dharma garment taken away and to travel with those evil masters who indulge in misconduct, so he returned the robe to Ananda. Then, the Blessed One was tamed, and his retinue was tamed; peaceful, and his retinue was peaceful; liberated, and his retinue was liberated; gone beyond, and his retinue had gone beyond; subdued, and his retinue was subdued; an Arhat, and his retinue were Arhats; free from desire, and his retinue was free from desire; beautiful, and his retinue was beautiful. Surrounded by retinue. Like Indra, surrounded by the assembly of the Thirty-Three Gods. Like Brahma, surrounded by the assembly of Brahma's retinue. The senses are subdued. Behavior and conduct are not disordered. Like a reservoir of water, still. Like a cloud, carrying water. Like the king of elephants, free from pride. Well adorned with the thirty-two marks of a great man. The eighty minor marks make the body extremely beautiful. A fathom of light adorns the body. Possessing light surpassing a thousand suns. Like a moving mountain of jewels, all-virtuous. Possessing the ten powers, the four fearlessnesses, and the unmixed qualities, abiding in the three close placements, possessing great compassion. Engaged in benefiting the world. The sole protector. The unique hero. Without a second. Not speaking two words. Abiding in calm abiding and insight, making the three knowledges clear. Well-trained in the three trainings. Skilled in the basis of the three disciplines. Crossing the four rivers. Well-established in the basis of practice with the four miraculous feet. Having long practiced the four objects of gathering. Not shaken by the four fearlessnesses. Abandoning the five obscurations. Completely liberated from the five destinies. Possessing six branches. Completing the six perfections. Abiding in the six constant abidings. Rich with the flowers of the seven branches of enlightenment. Showing the eightfold path. Skilled in the nine successive abidings of meditative absorption. Possessing the power of the ten strengths. Fame truly increasing in the ten directions. Surpassing the mastery of a hundred thousand. The retinue included great Shravaka disciples, the venerable Uruvilva Kashyapa, Gaya Kashyapa, Nadi Kashyapa, and others, a thousand former ascetics with matted hair, and the venerable Shariputra and the great Maudgalyayana, and many other monastic communities of monks, leading the way to travel through the Kosala country. When the Buddha, the Bhagavan, traveled, all bodies naturally, in a clockwise manner, like the king of elephants, would look, wondering if someone had not properly divided or properly held [something].

Having done so, the Blessed One, with his whole body looking back to the right in the manner of an elephant, saw the venerable Chos, wearing the upper garment, lower skirt, and so on, the complete set of Dharma robes, going on pilgrimage. Having seen this, the Blessed One said to the venerable Ānanda: Ānanda, have the gains of Dharma robes been completed by the monks in retreat? Blessed One, they have been completed. Then why is the monk Chos, wearing the upper garment, lower skirt, and so on, the complete set of Dharma robes, going on pilgrimage? He reported this matter in detail to the Blessed One, and the Blessed One said: Ānanda, do some monks give clothes to monks and then snatch them back? Venerable, yes, there are those who snatch them back. Then the Blessed One convened the assembly of monks because of this event, this origin, and this circumstance. And so on, as before. The Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, act knowingly, and so on, also as before. The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked Ānanda: Ānanda, is it true that you gave clothes to a monk and then snatched them back? Venerable, it is not so. The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked him, saying: This is not the conduct of a renunciant, it is not proper, it is not in accordance, it is not in conformity with the rules, this is not something to be done by one who has gone forth. Then, after rebuking him in various ways, the Blessed One said to the monks: Monks, therefore, having truly seen ten benefits, the basis of training for the hearers should be established. And so on, as before. My hearers should recite the basis of training in this way: Furthermore, if any monk gives clothes to a monk, and then afterwards becomes angry, agitated, and threatening, and being displeased, snatches them back or instigates others to snatch them back, and says to him: Monk, I will not give you clothes, give them back to me. If that monk has any remaining, he should return them and give them up, otherwise he commits an offense entailing expiation. Again, any monk, refers to Ānanda, son of the Śākyas, or anyone else like him. To a monk, refers to one who believes in this Dharma. Clothes, refers to the seven types.
