Twenty-first: Showing the Abandonment of Holding a Bowl. Twenty-first: Showing the Abandonment of Holding a Bowl. Summary: Two bowls and two threads. Giving, taking, showing the moon, inferior and, monastic person and great cloth, agreement and accumulation. The Blessed One Buddha was dwelling at Anathapindika's monastery in Jeta Grove in Shravasti. Then, the Venerable Nanda thought to himself: "All of these places are pervaded by the precepts established by the householder Anathapindika, so we cannot obtain any gains from anywhere." As he was thinking this, Nanda saw sixty joyful ones entering the garden. Having seen them, he thought to himself: "If I cannot obtain gains from these people, then I should not bear the name Nanda." The six groups were diligent. If they spoke of generosity, the listeners would think, "We should cut off our own flesh and give it away." If they spoke of morality, the listeners would think, "We are born among the gods." If they spoke of the lower realms, the listeners would think, "We are born in the lower realms." He took a clean bowl, round and fit for use, carried it under his arm, and went to where those joyful ones were. Having arrived, in order to make the mind of one of the joyful ones believe, he spoke of generosity in such a way that his mind became convinced, and he said: "Venerable, why have you come?" Nanda said: "Good sir, I need a bowl." He said: "Venerable, I do not have a bowl. If it can be obtained for a price, I will seek it and offer it." Nanda took the bowl from under his arm, showed it to him, and said: "Good sir, this bowl can also be obtained for a price." He asked: "Venerable, how much is it worth?" Sixty karshapanas. "I will offer sixty karshapanas for it." "Good sir, Arokha, may these be yours. By this generosity, may you obtain the adornment of the mind, the equipment of the mind, the assembly of yoga, and obtain the supreme meaning, and may you become a vessel among gods and humans."

Likewise, they made each of those sixty joyful groups contribute sixty karshapanas, and after contributing, they left. When all those joyful groups had gathered together, one of the joyful groups said, 'Wise ones, I offer sixty karshapanas as the value of a bowl to the venerable Nanda, who has renounced from the Shakya clan, who proclaims the Dharma, and who possesses the fearlessness of knowledge and liberation. Please rejoice!' Another said, 'I also offer.' Yet another said, 'I also offer.' Likewise, everyone said, 'I also offer.' 'I also offer.' After saying this, they began to look at each other, 'Wise ones, how many bowls does one bhikshu need?' They asked a bhikshu, 'Noble one, how many bowls does one bhikshu need?' He said, 'Excellent ones, only one is needed.' They began to reproach, saying, 'These Shakyaputra ascetics are those who are overwhelmed by the desire for gain!' This was just a temporary occurrence, and the Buddha, the Bhagavan, would not temporarily establish the basis of training for the Shravakas for the sake of taming. The Buddha, the Bhagavan, was residing in Jeta Grove, Anathapindika's Garden in Shravasti. At that time, the group of six bhikshus were accumulating all the bowls they obtained, and they were not purifying themselves, nor were they giving to other bhikshus. Then those bhikshus of few desires reproached, saying, 'Why do these bhikshus accumulate all the bowls they obtain, and do not use them themselves, nor give them to other bhikshus?' They were scolding, and speaking harshly. At that time, the bhikshus reported this matter to the Bhagavan. Then, because of this occurrence, this basis of discussion, and this situation, the Bhagavan convened the bhikshu sangha, etc., as before. The Buddhas, the Bhagavatans, knowingly commit offenses, etc., also as before. The Buddha, the Bhagavan, rebuked the group of six bhikshus, 'Bhikshus, you accumulate all the bowls you obtain, etc.'

does not do, nor does he use it himself. Nor does he give it to other monks, is that true? Venerable one, no. The Blessed One, the Buddha, severely rebuked what is not in accordance with the conduct of a renunciate, what is not in accordance, what is not appropriate, what is not in accordance with the rules, saying that this is not what a renunciate should do. Then, after the Blessed One had rebuked in various ways, he addressed the monks: Monks, therefore, having truly seen the ten benefits, one should establish the basis of training for the hearers in the Vinaya, and so forth, as before. My hearers should recite the basis of training in the Vinaya as follows: A monk should keep an extra bowl for up to ten days. If he keeps it longer than that, it is an offense entailing forfeiture. A monk, that means one who practices this Dharma. An extra bowl means more than what needs to be blessed. Up to ten days means up to the end of ten days and nights. To keep means to possess. To keep it longer than that means to keep it beyond that limit. An offense entailing forfeiture means that after abandoning the object, one must confess the offense of downfall. Therefore, it is called an offense entailing forfeiture. How does one incur an offense? For example, if a monk obtains a bowl on a certain day, then that monk should either bless that bowl within those ten days, or give it away, or distinguish it, or give it to another. If he does not bless it, does not give it away, does not distinguish it, does not give it to another, then when the dawn of the eleventh day arrives, he will incur an offense entailing forfeiture. If he does not obtain a bowl on a certain day, but obtains a bowl on the second day, or the third day, or the ninth day, or up to the tenth day, then that monk should either bless that bowl within those ten days, or give it away, or distinguish it, or give it to another. If he does not bless it, does not give it away, does not distinguish it, does not give it to another, then on the eleventh day
