Ninth: Explanation of the Sangha residue that is incompatible with others. Ninth: Explanation of the Sangha residue that is incompatible with others. The Buddha, the Bhagavan, was residing in the Kalanda Grove of the Radiant Garden in Rajagriha. At that time, the venerable Kashyapa Natha was dwelling on Vulture Peak Mountain in Rajagriha. Not far from there was a place called the Stone-Paved Pond, and the venerable Kashyapa Natha would spend the day there. When the lotus-colored virtuous friend relied on the venerable Maha Maudgalyayana, and having been well-spoken of, he went forth into the Vinaya of the Dharma and attained liberation from the Arhats, having attained liberation, he learned of this and, with faith, went again and again to behold the Bhagavan and the venerable elder monks. In particular, regarding the venerable Kashyapa Natha, he thought, 'Like this, even an Arhat who has attained the eight liberations has abandoned the bliss of meditation and liberation, and of entering into samadhi, and is diligently engaged in the affairs that accord with the Dharma of the Sangha, which is a difficult thing to do!' So he went again and again to behold him. At another time, having prostrated at the feet of the Bhagavan and the venerable elder monks, he went to where the venerable Kashyapa Natha was, and having arrived, he prostrated with his head at the two feet of the venerable Kashyapa Natha, and sat down in front to listen to the Dharma. At that time, two monks, Friend and Earth-Born, found an old face-cloth. These two had been enemies of the venerable Kashyapa Natha for lifetimes, and were always diligent in seeking quarrels. Friend said, 'Earth-Born, where should we wash this old face-cloth we found?' Earth-Born said, 'The Stone-Paved Pond is sparsely populated and the surroundings are clean, so let's go there.' So the two of them took the old face-cloth and went to the Stone-Paved Pond, and there they washed the old face-cloth, spread it out in the sun, and sat down. At that time, a herd of wild animals came to the Stone-Paved Pond to drink water, and then departed.

It does. The nature of deer is that one carries the other on its back. When did a deer mount a female deer's back and begin to engage in impure conduct, the act of copulation? A friend saw it and said, 'This giant bull, born from the earth, is engaging in impure conduct, the act of copulation, with the nun Utpala-varna. This should be told to the monks.' The one born from the earth said, 'O venerable friend, at that time, we two were also expelled from our dwelling. Do you now wish to subject us to being expelled from our dwelling again?' The friend said, 'O venerable one, born from the earth, at that time it was not true, but now I have some thoughts. Did you not see the giant bull and the nun Utpala-varna engaging in impure conduct, the act of copulation? O venerable one, there is no falsehood in this. Come, let us go and tell the monks.' The one born from the earth, having been deceived by his friend, agreed. The two of them went to the monastery and said to the monks, 'O venerable ones, we two have seen the venerable giant bull and the nun Utpala-varna engaging in impure conduct, the act of copulation. Which of us two should be believed?' The monks said, 'O venerable two, have you two completely abandoned the gods and humans and dwell in hell, among the pretas, and among the animals? You two are falsely accusing those monks, arhats, meditators on the eight liberations, who display the miraculous powers of the supreme human dharma, with a doctrine of defeat that is incompatible with them.' The two said, 'O venerable ones, we two are not falsely accusing them. Our own eyes have seen it, should our eyes be gouged out?' The Blessed One, as before, asked them, 'What did you see? How did you see it? Where did you see it? For what reason did you arrive there and see it? Speak well and thoroughly, examine it carefully.' After he had instructed them thus, the monks

What did you see in those two places? How did you see it? Where did you see it? Why did you two arrive there and see it there? Please speak and investigate thoroughly. After many monks had spoken and investigated thoroughly, the two of them said: Venerable ones, Venerable Gyadbu Wealth did not engage in impure conduct with the bhikkhuni Lotus Color, did not rely on the practice of sexual intercourse. Like this, Venerable Gyadbu Wealth raised (the price) three times with extremely unpleasant and bad food that would rot if we two ate it. We two have only slandered Venerable Gyadbu Wealth with a defeating dharma that is unrelated to others and similar. Venerable Gyadbu Wealth did not engage in impure conduct with the bhikkhuni Lotus Color, did not rely on the practice of sexual intercourse. Like this, the monk is pure and without fault. The few monks rebuked, saying: Why do the monks slander a monk who is pure and without fault with a defeating dharma that is unrelated to others and similar? They mocked, slandered, and insulted. At those times, the monks reported to the Blessed One. Then, because of this event, this origin, and this occasion, the Blessed One convened a gathering of the monastic community of monks. Like this and so on, it is the same as before. My hearers should recite the training rules for discipline like this: Furthermore, if any monk, being angry and hateful, thinking that he will separate this person from the ব্রহ্মচर्या (brahmacarya, brahmacarya, conduct of celibacy), slanders a monk who is pure and without fault with a defeating dharma that is unrelated to others and similar, even if he asks or does not ask at another time later, that dispute is unrelated to others, that dispute is unrelated to others and similar, merely because he has taken some dharmas from deliberation, and the monk also abides in hatred, and speaks out of hatred, it is a saṃghāvaśeṣa. Again, "Furthermore, any monk" refers to: a friend and one born from the earth, or anyone else like that. "Angry" means quarreling. "Hateful" means displeased, quarreling.
