Sixth, explaining the Sangha residue of dwellings. Sixth, explaining the Sangha residue of dwellings. The Buddha, the Bhagavan, was residing in Jeta Grove, Anathapindika's Garden in Shravasti. At that time, the monks had become very numerous with such dwellings. Some said, "This dwelling is too long," and abandoning it, they had others build it. Some said, "This dwelling is too short, this is too spacious, this is too narrow, this is too old, this is too weak, this is too poorly constructed," and abandoning it, they had others build it. They were building dwellings and having them built, causing affairs and activities to increase, thus abandoning the memorization of scriptures, reading, recitation, yoga, and contemplation, and repeatedly engaging in cutting grass, cutting trees, hiring people, and engaging in cart work, causing the Brahmins and householders to become critical. At that time, the venerable Maha-Kashyapa was residing in Shravasti, in the eastern Jeta Grove, in the mansion of the Deer-Mother. Then, the venerable Maha-Kashyapa heard that many monks had become very numerous with such dwellings. Having heard this, in the afternoon, he arose from his meditation and went to where the Bhagavan was. Having arrived, he bowed his head at the feet of the Bhagavan and sat down to one side. Having sat down to one side, the venerable Maha-Kashyapa said to the Bhagavan, "Venerable, now the monks have become very numerous with such dwellings. Some say, 'This dwelling is too long,' and abandoning it, they have others build it. Some say, 'This dwelling is too short, this is too spacious, this is too narrow, this is too old, this is too weak, this is too poorly constructed,' and abandoning it, they have others build it. They are building dwellings and having them built, causing affairs and activities to increase, thus abandoning the memorization of scriptures, reading, recitation, yoga, and contemplation, and repeatedly engaging in cutting and felling trees, hiring people, and engaging in cart work, causing the Brahmins and householders to become critical. Bhagavan, for the sake of compassion, please...

Please instruct the monks well on the houses and the foundations of the houses. The Blessed One did not say anything to the Venerable Mahakashyapa, and thus consented. Then, the Venerable Mahakashyapa, knowing that the Blessed One had consented by not speaking, bowed his head to the two feet of the Blessed One and departed from before the Blessed One. Then, after that night had passed, the Venerable Mahakashyapa, in order to protect the minds of those who practice the same Brahma, took his alms bowl and robes and went on a journey. Then, the Blessed One said, "Because this happened, this topic, this occasion, the Sangha of monks gathered," and so on, as before. The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked many monks, "Monks, your houses have become so numerous that some say, 'This house is too long,' and then abandon it and have others build it; some say, 'This house is too short,' 'This house is too wide,' 'This house is too narrow,' 'This house is too old,' 'This house is too weak,' 'This house is built too poorly,' and then abandon it and have others build it, is this true?" "No, Venerable One." The Buddha, the Blessed One, condemned great desire, dissatisfaction, difficulty in satisfying, and difficulty in filling. Then, the Blessed One praised having few desires, contentment, ease in satisfying, ease in filling, reducing possessions, having the qualities of asceticism and virtue, and knowing moderation. Then, the Blessed One said to the monks, "Monks, therefore, in order to fully see the ten benefits, the Shravakas should establish the basis of learning in the Vinaya," and so on, as before. "My Shravakas should recite the basis of learning in the Vinaya in this way: If a monk asks me to beg, without an owner, to build a house for me, then that monk should have the house built according to the measurements. The measurements of the house are as follows: internally, twelve times the height of the Tathagata, and seven times the width. In order to see the foundation, that monk should invite the monks. The invited monk
