Explanation of the Thirty Expiations Involving Forfeiture. Explanation of the Thirty Expiations Involving Forfeiture. Summary Verse: Holding, separation, placing, washing, receiving, begging, and upper and lower garments, entrusting values separately. Venerable ones, these thirty offenses involving forfeiture arise from reciting the Pratimoksha Sutra every half month. A bhikkhu who has obtained robes, if he has finished sewing, should keep the extra cloth that has not been made available for distribution for up to ten days. If he keeps it beyond that, it is an offense involving forfeiture. A bhikkhu who has obtained robes, if he has finished sewing, if even for one night he separates any of the three robes from his dwelling, unless permitted by the Sangha, it is an offense involving forfeiture. A bhikkhu who has obtained robes, if he has finished sewing, if he finds an out-of-season robe and wants to receive it, that bhikkhu should receive the robe. Having received it, if it is enough, he should quickly make it into a robe and keep it. If it is not enough, and he hopes to supplement it with other cloth, that bhikkhu should keep the robe until the end of a month. If he keeps it beyond that time, it is an offense involving forfeiture. Furthermore, if a bhikkhu has a non-relative bhikkhuni wash an old robe, or dye it, or sew it, it is an offense involving forfeiture. Furthermore, if a bhikkhu receives robes from a non-relative bhikkhuni, except for exchange, it is an offense involving forfeiture. Furthermore, if a bhikkhu goes to a non-relative householder or the householder's wife to beg for robes, except for a time, it is an offense involving forfeiture. That time is when a bhikkhu's robe is robbed, or lost, or burned, or carried away by the wind, or carried away by the water, that is the time. If a bhikkhu's robe is robbed, or lost, or burned, or carried away by the wind, or carried away by the water, he should go to a non-relative householder or the householder's wife to beg for robes. If a Brahmin or a faithful householder wants to give many robes because of the occasion, that bhikkhu should take at most the upper and lower robes from among them. If he takes more than that, it is an offense involving forfeiture.
