Thus have I heard: At one time, the Blessed One was residing in the pigeon land (Indian place name), in the temple called Sancho (Sanchi), on the twentieth day of the winter month of the snake year (specific year unknown). At that time, a monk named 'Life Declaration' went to the city called 'Dwelling Place' for some matter. That monk traveled about a hundred yojanas from the city of Han land (referring to China). There, that monk saw from afar a huge body thirty 'khrun' (unit of measurement) tall, with a face four 'pa' (unit of measurement) high. Having seen it, the monk Life Declaration thought to himself, 'Alas, this person's body is so huge, he must be Mañjuśrī Kumārabhūta.' Thinking this, he knelt on both knees, pressed his palms together towards the direction where the huge body was, and said to the huge body, 'Are you Mañjuśrī Kumārabhūta? Are you here?' Mañjuśrī said, 'Monk, it is so.' The monk said, 'Mañjuśrī, why are you here?' Mañjuśrī Kumārabhūta said, 'Monk, in this Jambudvīpa, sentient beings suffer from various kinds of diseases. Yakshas, Asuras, Garudas, and Gandharvas dwell on one side of Mount Sumeru, the king of mountains. Therefore, the light of the sun and moon cannot appear. The sun, moon, planets, and stars also cannot appear in the sky.' At that time, gods and Asuras also wage war. When war is waged, the gods are defeated, and the Asuras are victorious. At that time, spirits and others spread diseases to sentient beings in the form of women, such as: swollen throat, smallpox, fever, stomach ache, one-day fever, two-day fever, three-day fever, four-day fever, diseases caused by wind, diseases caused by bile, diseases caused by phlegm, diseases caused by a combination, headache, cataracts, scabies, fever, eye diseases, and so on.

The intermediate practice. At that time, all sentient beings in Jambudvipa are completely afflicted by various diseases. The fierce lion and jackal and tiger and snake, etc., in their forms, take away the radiance of sentient beings, because for the sentient beings of Jambudvipa, they are faced with untimely death, so it is also difficult to liberate sentient beings from disease. In this Jambudvipa, among the elderly and middle-aged and young people, thirty million kotis will die. Therefore, I, the monk, have come to you. You should proclaim this Dharma category to all sentient beings in Jambudvipa. Why is that? Because all sentient beings in Jambudvipa hope to think, how can we be liberated from all the bonds of suffering? Therefore, monk, you should proclaim this sutra to all sentient beings, and strive to generate roots of virtue for all sentient beings! Always and constantly have faith in the Three Jewels! Do not forget the gods! Offer incense and flowers and incense to the stupas or images of the Tathagata! Also recite the excellent Dharani!
