Existing afflictions are abandoned through acquisition, cessation, separation, attainment, and arising. All non-afflictive contaminated virtues, non-obscuring unpronounced, form, and formless phenomena that exist in one's own continuum are said to be abandoned when the desire and attachment to afflictions in one's own continuum, which are the objects of those phenomena, are abandoned. This has already been explained together with the scriptural evidence that enables understanding. (That is, what is abandoned by the path of seeing is abandoned all at once, and what is abandoned by the path of cultivation is abandoned gradually. Even what is abandoned by the path of seeing is said to be abandoned gradually if abandoned by a child.) The nature of being far apart, distance itself, is also of four kinds: being far apart due to different characteristics even though dwelling in the same group, like the four elements of earth, etc.; being far apart due to opposing sides and antidotes, like discipline and immoral discipline; being far apart due to completely separated places, like the eastern and western oceans, etc., which are different places; and being far apart due to time, as it says in the Abhidharma: "What are distant times? They are past and future dharmas. What are close dharmas? They are present dharmas, and the unconditioned." Thus, the two times of past and future are like distance itself. If asked, "From what are these two times distant?" The Vaibhashikas say, "From the present." Then the immediately past and the future that is manifestly approaching birth would also become close, because the present is obstructed by other things. If it is said that closeness and distance are not established by whether or not there is obstruction, but rather distance is established by different times, then the present would also become distant, because it is a different time from the past and future. Then it is because the two times have activity that they are distant, because the activity has ceased and has not yet been attained? If that is the case, then the unconditioned would also become distant, because there is no activity. This cannot be accepted, because it is said to be close in the scriptures. If it is said that because "two cessations" refers to the unconditioned, the attainment of the two cessations arises in all places, therefore it is close, then the past and future of virtuous, non-virtuous, and formless phenomena would be close, and the unconditioned and space would become distant, because "the three aspects of the three times" means that the attainment of the two times also arises in all places.

Because of abandoning, and because of not obtaining in space. If the past and future are separated by the present, therefore they are distant from each other. The present is not separated by the two times, therefore it is near in relation to the two times. The unconditioned (uncompounded) is not separated by anything, therefore it is near. If that is the case, then the past and future will become both near and far, because the past is far in relation to the future, and near in relation to the present, and the future is near in relation to the present, and far in relation to the past. It is not possible to think so, because it contradicts the view that the past and future are only distant. Therefore, the present master refutes the view of the Vaibhashikas, and himself thinks that the past and future are far from the entity of the self-nature of Dharma because their own nature has disappeared and has not been obtained. This is their view. Second, explaining how to abandon subtle increase.
