It is said that 'that' is change and growth (or movement). Because the object that changes exists in dependence on other things. (Or, according to the Vaibhashikas, Master Gampopa explains that the nature is the three times, and the function only includes the present.) The Sutra school says that because the objects of all actions do not necessarily exist simultaneously, and even if they may exist in some cases, it cannot be inferred that the four great elements exist simultaneously because it is not universal. If they manifest when they meet with conditions, it is because they are newly produced there. Therefore, they do not necessarily arise simultaneously, but in reality they do not exist in their own nature, and everything exists in the form of seeds. Whatever is the object, it also exists in the form of manifestation. As the Blessed One said, "In this aggregate of trees, there are various kinds of elements." Therefore, they say so. The Yogacharas say that, according to the Compendium of Determinations, in an aggregate, whichever element manifests, it is there. It should be said that there are aggregates made of one element, aggregates made of two elements, and even aggregates made of all elements. For the form that is the cause, it should also be known that whichever form that is the cause gathers, whichever manifests, it is there. Therefore, the form made of one element is like a dry trunk, the form made of two elements is like a wet one, the form made of three elements is like a warm one, and the form made of four elements is like a moving one. Similarly, the form that is the result, the one with only one form is light, the one with two is air with sound and smell, the one with three is smoke with color, smell, and light touch, the one with four is a piece of agarwood, and the one with five is a piece of agarwood with sound. They think so. Then, what does it mean when the sutra says, "Whatever form it may be, all of them are the four great elements and made by the four great elements"? They think that this refers to the case where all four are complete. For the Vaibhashikas who believe that eight substances arise simultaneously, if the birth place is regarded as real, then that is saying too much. The four great elements are the touch of...

Because they are assembled in the place of origin. If one considers substance as substance, then this is said to be too little, because there are other things such as shape and weight there. It is also not the case that the elements are taken as substance alone, while others are taken as substance in the place of origin, because most of the shape of the fruit depends on the four great elements, so it should be said that it becomes many substances. Furthermore, there is this investigation here: If those eight substances occur in the same place, meaning simultaneously, then the atoms will not be obstructive. If it is thought that being established in contiguity is what that means, then like a vase, countless atoms exist contiguously, so it is not necessarily eight, etc. Some here think that it is the same place, and that the atoms are said to be obstructive are those of the same kind, but those of different kinds are not obstructive, because in the place of form there is touch, and in the place of touch there is smell, etc. Some think so. (That is not reasonable, because it would become non-obstructive.) (It would also become not creating grossness.) Some think that even different kinds are obstructive, because if in the place of a form atom there is touch, etc., then it would become non-different. Therefore, it is thought that being established in contiguity is what simultaneity means, because many atoms of a vase, etc., do not necessarily arise simultaneously, while eight, etc., are said to be necessarily arising simultaneously, so there is no contradiction. Therefore, in the commentary it says: The smallest form of all is called the accumulated subtle atom, and what is smaller than that is invisible. If it is in the desire realm, and there is neither sound nor sense organ, then it will arise with eight substances, and it will not be without any one of them, because it is said so. They say so, and that is what it means. (What color is the wind? It has color because it has smell. Like a flower in the ear.) If it is not possessed of more than eight substances, then if it possesses the sense of body, then adding the previous eight and the sense of body itself, it possesses nine substances. In the collection of senses

Because the roots are necessarily existent, and the faculties are substances other than those. Furthermore, those possessing other faculties, such as the eyes, have ten substances, namely the previous nine and any one of the eyes, etc. Similarly, those possessing eight, nine, and ten, if they arise together with sound, will possess nine, ten, and eleven, because sound is counted separately from them. In the Form Realm, because there is no smell or taste, those without faculties are six, those possessing the body faculty are seven, those possessing other faculties are eight, and if together with sound, nine arise together. It should be known that in the Formless Realm, because there is no form at all, there is no arising together with form.
