Detailed Explanation Proper: First, the General Meaning. Detailed Explanation Proper: First, the General Meaning. Here, the general meaning is that all knowable things are summarized by five bases: form, mind, mental factors, non-associated compositional factors, and unconditioned phenomena. Among these, the Vaibhashikas assert that all of these are substantially existent, because they are Sarvastivadins. Among these, form is the form aggregate, namely, atoms, gross matter, and that which is neither of the two. Atoms, because they are partless, do not touch each other, but are surrounded by many with intervals. If they touched, if they touched from all directions, they would become mutually mixed; if they touched from one direction, they would become partful, so they believe. As it says in the Siddhi of External Objects: Because atoms have different directional parts, those who say they are nonexistent are unrelated. Some atoms with distinctions are designated by the term 'direction.' Therefore, due to the distinction of directional parts, it is only said that they are completely surrounded by many, but that atom is not of the nature of having parts. And: Without touching each other's nature, they remain partless. Therefore, such as the mandala of the earth, arise from accumulation. As it is said. If these atoms that abide in accumulation do not touch, will they be destroyed? They will not be destroyed, because they are held by the wind, and also because the power of matter connects them. As it says in that very text: By the distinction of mutually benefiting each other, like being strung together with thread, atoms such as diamonds will not be cut off. Just as by the power of mantras, ghosts and snakes are held, so by the power of matter, they hold each other like a string of beads. As it is said. Then, how is it that heat touch harms cold touch, light harms darkness, darkness obscures form, and light does not become a cause of manifestation, since they do not touch each other? It is not so. When heat touch and light particles, etc., are near, the movement of cold touch and darkness particles, etc., stops, so it is said to be harm and obscuration, etc., but not because other parts touch. As it says in that very text: Whatever and

From the "Near Affairs": Whatever has the ability to move, when its movement stops, that is fully explained as its obstruction, not other parts. If atoms did not gather, then striking drums and so on would not produce sound. Even if they do not gather, sound arises because they are very close and wind gathers. Some say that atoms are round and without parts, but this is not correct. Because atoms have no shape, it will be explained that atoms do not have duality. The measure of atoms and the way they exist together will be explained below. The reasoning is the five senses and the five objects. The five senses are: the atoms of the eye sense exist in the eye like black sesame flowers on the fruit of the eye. They exist separately, but because they are covered with color and luster, they do not separate. Some say that they exist roundly like balls, up and down, but like glass, the parts located in the middle and at the edges do not obstruct each other because they are transparent. The atoms of the ear sense exist in what is called the "ear drum," like buckwheat spikes. The atoms of the nose sense are like copper female needles, existing in the nasal passages inside the nostrils. The first three senses are arranged circularly like rosary beads. The atoms of the tongue sense are like a half-moon, with only a space the size of a hair tip in the center of the tongue not covered by the atoms of the tongue sense. The atoms of the body sense exist like the body. A distinction of the body sense: the atoms of the female sense are like the cavity of a drum. The atoms of the male sense are like a thumb, as stated in the treatises. The commentary says: A single atom of a sense or an object does not produce consciousness, because the basis and object of the five consciousnesses are accumulations. The Ornament of the Middle Way says: The realms of the five consciousnesses are aspects that focus on accumulation. It is neither atom nor coarse.
