The actual text explains the first topic, which is the explanation of the realms. The actual text explains the first topic, which is the explanation of the realms. In the meaning of the text, the first of the eight topics is the explanation of the realms, which has three aspects: a detailed classification of the condensed aggregates, a list of names, and a detailed explanation of the aggregates, realms, and sources. The first aspect is: those conditioned phenomena other than the path. What are those conditioned phenomena that are called contaminated? In response to the question of what they are, (it is stated that conditioned phenomena, etc., are discussed, and the basis for classifying them into five is as follows. As stated in the Bodhisattvacaryāvatāra: "That which is gathered by a single condition does not exist anywhere." And as stated in the Jātaka: "That which is accomplished by a single cause does not exist anywhere." Therefore, since it does not arise from a single cause and condition, but is made by the accumulation and combination of multiple causes and conditions, it is called conditioned. Dharma is explained in the commentary on logic as having ten meanings, and in the scattered scriptures, it is said that "holding characteristics is called dharma," so here it refers to the dharmas that cognize their own characteristics. The word "also" means that not only is there a distinction between dharmas and the unconditioned, but there is also a distinction within the conditioned dharmas. The objects that are distinguished are the aggregates of liberation such as morality, and the aggregates of form such as form excluding the five objects, feeling, perception, formation, and consciousness. The former does not include all conditioned phenomena. The number of divisions is five. The number of divisions is fixed at five in order to show the basis for grasping at self and what belongs to self. Because most children grasp at consciousness as self and form, etc., as what belongs to self. In order, external and internal forms are thought to be related to self as the agent and the object, feeling is thought to be experienced by self, perception is thought to apply terms through the cognition of things seen and heard, and the mind that grasps at self is thought to be engaged in virtue, etc., by formations. Therefore, it is grasped as what belongs to self. As stated in the Abhidharmakośa-bhāṣya: There are only five aggregates, and they are neither more nor less in order to clearly show the basis for grasping at self and what belongs to self. Because most children grasp at consciousness

The self is apprehended as self, and the rest, such as form, are apprehended as belonging to the self. Thus it is said. In the Compendium of Topics, the aggregates are taught in order to show the five aspects of the basis of apprehension, and thus the number is definitely stated in accordance with the necessity. Alternatively, conditioned phenomena are definitely divided into two: those with form and those without. Those without form are definitely divided into mind and non-mind, and conditioned form and non-mind are definitely the three aggregates of feeling, etc. Thus it is said. What is the meaning of such a division? Are these five aggregates different entities, different names, different aspects of the same entity, or different by negation of one?) Whatever is the aggregate of form, and the aggregates of feeling, perception, formation, and consciousness, which are included by the word "etc.," are those five aggregates. Conditioned phenomena are made by the meeting and gathering of causes, and there is nothing that is produced by a single cause. Then, how are future, unborn phenomena conditioned? Because they are of the same kind as phenomena that will be born and have the same characteristics, they are called conditioned phenomena. Just as milk that comes from the breast is of the same kind, and what remains in the body of the cow without being milked is also called milk. The word "but" is to show that not only unconditioned phenomena have distinctions, but conditioned phenomena also have distinctions. Saying "form, etc." and "aggregates" is to exclude the aggregates of liberation, such as discipline, and the outer sense bases. Are these aggregates one entity, many entities, negation of one, or different names? The Vaibhashikas consider them to be different entities. Thus, the aggregate of form is considered to be the nature of gross and subtle particles, and both are considered to be entities. Feeling, perception, and associated formations are different from form and mind, and they are also considered to be different within themselves. Non-associated formations are considered to be different things from form, mind, and mental events. Consciousness is also different from the other aggregates, so all five aggregates exist as entities, just as one says "the body of Devadatta," which is both an aggregate and form.
