In the Bardo (the intermediate state between death and rebirth), recognize it by these signs: Do not be afraid of those terrifying forms. Because of the delusion of your own mind, they appear. Recognize those terrifying images as manifestations of your Yidam (personal deity for practice). Furthermore, as a sign of being in the Bardo, there may appear huge mountains, lions, tigers, leopards, and various ferocious beasts baring their teeth and extending their claws, huge rocks collapsing, the earth being flooded with water, fire raging in the sky, and various fears such as being carried away by great winds in all ten directions. If these occur, recognize that these are signs that you are in the Bardo. Do not be afraid of these, because all appearances are your own mind. For example, just as you fear your own shadow, do not be afraid. Recognize that this is the delusion of your own mind. Furthermore, as a sign of being in the Bardo, various uncertain signs will appear. You will go to huge places and various cities that you have never seen before, see all kinds of people, associate with all kinds of friends, see all kinds of birds and animals, and various illusions will appear. Do not be attached to the good, do not hate the bad, relax your mind, and remembering your Guru (spiritual teacher) and Yidam is very important. Furthermore, if you see various hellish scenes such as the iron ground of the hell realms, mountains of needles, forests of sword leaves, as well as the cities of pretas (hungry ghosts) and various islands of animals, do not be afraid, because this is the magic of your own mind. As it is said in the Bodhicaryāvatāra (A Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life): 'All fears and immeasurable sufferings arise from the mind, as the Buddha has truly said.' It is also said in the Satipaṭṭhāna Sutta (Discourse on the Establishing of Mindfulness): 'The mind is an enemy, a great enemy, there is no enemy worse than the mind. Just as a fire drill burns itself, so too does the mind burn away happiness.' As it is said, through the various groundless fears produced by this ignorant mind, understand its meaning. Furthermore, during the Bardo period, your awareness will become weak and easily changed, and before your mind is controlled by attachment and aversion, remembering loving-kindness and compassion is very important. During the Bardo, recognizing the state of the Bardo is very important, and remembering the Guru's instructions is very important. Furthermore, during the Bardo period, do not be attached to the loving calls of relatives, saying 'Come back!', or saying 'We will give you various foods and clothes.' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Do not go to that place (referring to the evil realms) due to attachment. If you go there, you will become a messenger of Yama (Lord of Death), experiencing great suffering and becoming a cause for rebirth in the lower realms. Therefore, recognize this. Furthermore, in the Bardo (intermediate state), because you have not realized that you have died, you still think you are alive as before, and you have done many inappropriate things in my house, eating food that should not be eaten, taking things that should not be taken, saying things that should not be said, being close to and weeping. If such appearances occur, it indicates that you are in the Bardo state. Therefore, listen to these heartfelt words of introduction. So-and-so, recognize that you have died! Let go of all attachments! After you die, even if you are attached in the Bardo state, it will be of no use, so let others know everything you do! Food, wealth, and relatives will not follow you, so let go of your attachments! Now there is no protector, so invite the Guru (teacher), Yidam (personal deity), Three Jewels (Buddha, Dharma, Sangha), Dakinis (female sky dancers), Dharma Protectors, etc., and take refuge in them with pure intention, focusing your mind one-pointedly, and visualize as follows: In front is a vast liberation palace, square, with four doors and decorations, in the center is a precious throne supported by eight great elephants, on which are spread lotus flowers, moons, and various silks. Akshobhya Buddha (Mitakshobha), with a body color like the clear blue sky, adorned with marks and signs, sitting in the vajra posture, with his right hand in the earth-touching mudra and his left hand in the meditation mudra, wearing red monastic robes. Above him are the Kagyu lineage Gurus, in the middle is the mandala of the Yidams of the four tantra classes, below are the Dakinis and Dharma Protectors, and in all directions are Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, abiding radiantly. Visualize your own body multiplying into as many as there are dust particles in the field, prostrating to them. We will also help you prostrate, so please be sure to listen. Recite the name of Akshobhya Buddha. The benefits of reciting this name: In the Ratnakuta Sutra, it is said: 'At the time of death, remember the Buddha, show the body of the Joyful Tathagata, at the time of death, take refuge in the Buddha, and you will surely enter the wheel of the Tathagata's teachings.' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
