Therefore, the duration of the bardo is not entirely certain. Some may find their way out within a few weeks, while others may wander in the bardo for months or even years, unaware that they have died, due to various reasons. However, in most cases, the bardo lifespan mentioned in numerous sutras and tantras is forty-nine days. Even in these cases, as it is said, "For the first three days, one faints as if in pitch-black unconsciousness," there will be fainting from the cessation of inner breath until three days, and on the fourth day after three days, consciousness is regained. If on that day, an introduction and transference of consciousness are performed by a lama or great accomplished being, it is very important as it is related to the timing. After that, every seventh day after death, the appearance of death will occur again as it did at the time of the previous death. Therefore, according to the key moments of the seven-day cycle, inviting or replacing the lama or great accomplished being and reciting the essential rituals will surely become a helpful means of finding the way out. Thus, according to one's own financial means, performing rituals such as purification and accumulation of merit, striving to accumulate virtuous deeds that are not mixed with sin, and after the completion of forty-nine days, having the lama or great accomplished being perform the profound rituals of complete dedication and guidance on the path of liberation, etc., are also extremely important. Likewise, during the forty-nine days, one should focus on the deceased and always offer butter lamps of pure and excellent quality. Furthermore, regarding butter lamps, there are explanations of outer, inner, and secret butter lamps, etc. In the past, when our teacher was in the stage of learning the path, he took birth as a body called King Golden Hand, at which time he carved holes of flesh in his own body, inserted a thousand cotton wicks, and prayed for the awareness of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas of the ten directions, offering his own body as a butter lamp. Similarly, in this present time, erecting standard wicks on a clean offering table and filling them with pure substances such as butter or vegetable oil, etc., can dispel the darkness of ignorance of the intended object, increase wisdom, pacify the suffering of the bardo, restore broken vows, reveal the appearance of liberation, actually perfect the accumulation of merit, and through the lineage, perfect the accumulation of wisdom, ultimately easily attaining the state of complete enlightenment, etc. The benefits and blessings are inconceivable.

Furthermore, offering food and desirable things dedicated to sentient beings in the bardo is extremely important because its essence and benefits are inconceivable. The reason for this is also mentioned in the sutras and tantras: "Those who appear first with a body of flesh and blood, who do not turn back, are aroma-eaters." Those who dwell in the bardo are separated from a physical body of flesh and blood and rely solely on the bardo mind-body. They mainly subsist by consuming scents, so if one makes offerings of desirable things and food with the essential points in mind, the benefits are great. Guru Rinpoche said in a treasure prophecy: "Especially for sentient beings in the bardo, mix various foods with silk and tiger skin, and the scent of the burnt offering dedicated in this way will block the doors of the four kinds of birth, generate the four immeasurables in the mindstream, manifest the four colors of the rainbow, and possess the essence of the vajra Hūṃ of the heart. The scent of burning food and clothing together will act as a refuge, a guide, and a protector for sentient beings in the bardo. It will pacify the suffering of cold and hunger in the bardo, as well as the suffering of being uncontrollably influenced by others, bringing happiness and contentment. Whatever is desired will continuously arise without interruption. The six afflictions will be self-liberated, and the doors to the six realms of rebirth will be closed from their very foundation. For the benefit of beings, the emanation body will be continuous." This comes from the treasure teachings of treasure masters such as Dorje Lingpa, Shikpo Lingpa, and Samten Lingpa. Adorn the offerings with pure foods and clothing, and offer the choicest portions along with drinks to the Buddhas and their heirs, thereby completing the accumulation of merit for the object of focus. Burn the remaining ashes without smoke or flames into a fine powder and dedicate them to the assembly of aroma-eaters in the bardo. This will enable them to subsist on the scent of the burnt offering in the bardo temporarily, and ultimately, it will also become a cause for seizing the path to liberation and omniscience. In particular, the burnt offering for liberation is indispensable, and its benefits are beyond words. One can learn about the benefits of the burnt offering for liberation from the teachings of Dorje Lingpa and Karma Lingpa, among others. Thus, whatever virtue is accumulated for the sake of any particular object of focus, and in general, whatever virtue, whether great, small, or middling, must be combined with profound dedication and aspirations, for its benefits and power are inconceivable. As the sutra says: "Just as a drop of water falling into the great ocean will not be exhausted until the ocean itself is exhausted, likewise, the virtue that is fully dedicated to enlightenment will not be exhausted until enlightenment is attained."
